Inequalities
Can you handle the ride?
Welcome to G-Force Gardens
Before you get in line, you have to check the height requirements. Every ride has a limit!
The Titan
You must be at least 48 inches tall.
Sky Rocket
Your height must be more than 54 inches.
Kiddy Coaster
You must be under 42 inches tall.
What is an Inequality?
An inequality is a mathematical sentence that compares two expressions using symbols.
Equation
h = 48
"You must be exactly 48 inches."
Inequality
h ≥ 48
"You must be 48 inches OR taller."

Thrill Seeker Inequalities | Facilitator Guide
Room Setup (Do this before class)
The Line: Place a 15-foot strip of masking tape across the floor. Use a marker to label 30" to 65" in 5-inch increments.
The Passes: Have the "Ride Entry Passes" cut out and ready to hand to students as they enter or during Slide 6.
1-2
The Hook
Say: "Welcome to G-Force Gardens! Today, you aren't just students—you are the Ride Operators. Your job is simple but critical: solve the math to keep our guests safe. Have you ever been to a park and stood against one of those height sticks? That’s not just a suggestion; it’s an inequality!"
Ask: "If a sign says 'You must be at least 48 inches tall,' can you ride if you are exactly 48 inches? What about 48.5? What about 47?"
3-4
Concepts
Say: "An equation like \( h = 48 \) is boring—it means only ONE person can ride. Inequalities use symbols like 'greater than' or 'less than' to show a whole RANGE of people who can ride. Look at Slide 4. These are our tools. Think of 'At Most' and 'At Least' as your 'boundary' words. They mean the number itself is invited to the party!"
5
Graphing
Circle Secret Hack:
"If the symbol has an extra line underneath (\(\le, \ge\)), it takes extra ink to write. That means it takes 'extra ink' to draw—we fill the circle in! If it's a simple symbol (\(<, >\)), it's an open circle."
6-9
The Game
Human Number Line Procedure:
Hand out the **Ride Entry Passes** to each student.
Tell students to stand on the tape line at their height.
Read the scenario on the slide.
The Command: "If your height makes this inequality TRUE, strike a pose! If it's FALSE, stay still."
The Discussion: Look at the student standing exactly on the boundary number. Ask the class: "Is they striking a pose? Should their circle be open or closed?"
10
Transition
Say: "You've proven you can handle the rush. Now, head back to your stations. You have a stack of Ride Safety reports (the worksheet) to finalize before the park opens. Go get your VIP status!"
