Key Vocabulary
Sum & Difference A sum is the result of adding numbers. A difference is the result of subtracting one number from another.
Estimate An approximate calculation or "close enough" answer. We round numbers to a specific place value to estimate.
Regrouping Rearranging groups of 10 into the next place value. Carrying over when adding, or borrowing when subtracting.
Compatible Numbers Friendly numbers that are close to the actual numbers but easy to compute mentally (e.g., pairing 25 and 75).
Core Skills & Worked Examples
Skill 1: Mental Math & Compensation
Adjust one number to make it a friendly number, then correct the result at the end.
Example: Find \(354 + 199\) mentally.
• Add 200 instead of 199: \(354 + 200 = 554\).
• Since you added 1 too many, subtract 1 from the result: \(554 - 1 = 553\).
Skill 2: Multi-Digit Addition (Regrouping)
Stack numbers vertically, align place values, and add right to left. Carry tens over to the next column.
1. Add ones first: \(5 + 9 = 14\) ones. Write 4, carry 1 to tens.
2. Add tens: \(1 \text{ (carried)} + 2 + 8 = 11\) tens. Write 1, carry 1.
3. Keep going across columns from right to left!
¹ ¹ ¹ 45,825 + 37,289 83,114
Skill 3: Subtracting Across Zeros
If there are no numbers to borrow from directly next door, travel left until you find a non-zero digit.
• Target: \(5,000 - 1,245\)
• Borrow 1 thousand from 5. It becomes 4 thousands.
• Middle zeros become 9s, and final zero becomes 10 ones.
• Subtract column by column!
⁴ ⁹ ⁹ 🔟 5,000 - 1,245 3,755
