Math: Geometry & Measurement
Objective
Students will practice identifying and creating shapes (circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles) by counting their sides and corners.
Key Vocabulary
Side: A straight line that forms a shape.
Corner: Where two sides meet (pointy).
Equal: Exactly the same length.
Parallel: Lines that never touch (like tracks).
Materials

Lesson Procedure

Warm-Up: The Magic Dot
Teacher Action: Draw a single dot on the white board.
Ask the class: "What shape can we make that has NO corners and just one line that goes all the way around?" Help students visualize the dot expanding into a circle.

Shape Discovery (Video)
Play the Khan Academy Kids video. Use the provided slide deck to pause at key moments:
- 0:11: Ask students to make a circle with their hands.
- 0:18: Point to the corners. Ask "If I add one more side, is it a triangle?"
- 0:24: Square vs. Rectangle. Discuss "Equal" (all sides same length).
- 0:30: Use hands to show "Parallel" lines (train tracks).

Geoboard Challenges
Hand out geoboards and rubber bands. Call out challenges and allow students to explore:
Challenge Levels:
- 1 "Make a shape with 3 sides!" (Triangle)
- 2 "Make a shape with 4 equal sides!" (Square)
- 3 "Make a rectangle with parallel sides!"
- 4 "Can you make a circle on a geoboard?" (Discussion point: Why is it hard? Sides are straight!)

Gallery Walk
Students leave their favorite creation on their desk. The class walks around quietly to see everyone's "Shape Masterpieces." Ask students to whisper the name of the shape they see as they pass.
Pro-Tips for Success
Misconception Alert
Many students think a tilted square is a "diamond." Remind them to count the sides and check if they are equal!
Safety First
Remind students that rubber bands are for geoboards only. "Two hands on the band, eyes on the board!"
