What about Circles?
Circles curve forever! They have 0 straight sides.
Quick Test: How many straight sides does a door have? (4!)
Count each straight side once and stop when you reach the start!

Clue #2: Spot the Pointy Corners!
Corner Clues
A Square Has 4 Corners!
A corner is where two straight sides meet at a point.
📍
Big Math Word: Vertex
One corner is called a vertex . Many are vertices !

Core Standard
CCSS.MATH.K.G.A.2 & K.G.B.4: Identify and describe attributes of 2D shapes.
Key Vocabulary
Flat, 2D, Straight Side, Curve, Corner (Vertex), Circle, Triangle, Square, Rectangle.
Prep & Materials
Shape slides, mystery feely bag, foam shapes, craft sticks, student trackers & worksheets.
Student Learning Goals (I Can):
Name circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles.
Count straight sides and identify curved lines.
Touch and count pointy corners (vertices).
Spot flat 2D shapes in the classroom environment.
Phase 1: Mystery Bag Hook & Wonder
10 Mins • Rug Time
Hook Script: "Detectives! I have a secret shape hidden inside this dark mystery bag. I am reaching inside... Ooh, it has 3 straight sides, and when I tap the points, it has 3 sharp corners! What could it be?"
Teacher Move: Let 2 students reach into the bag with eyes closed to describe smooth vs. pointy before revealing!
Phase 2: Interactive Slides & Anchor Chart Modeling
15 Mins • Whole Group
Display Shape Detectives Slides . Review flat ("pancake") vs. solid ("ball"). Model the Finger Slide Technique for counting sides: place finger at a corner, slide down the line, stop at the next corner.
Choral Chant: "Triangles have three! 1, 2, 3! Squares have four! 1, 2, 3, 4! Circles curve round and round!"
Phase 3: Guided Practice & Target Tracker
10 Mins • Pairs
Hand out the Shape Detective Targets Chart (Page 2) . Have students test each target with a partner. Partners check each other: "Show me 4 corners on the square!" Teachers circulate to award initial detective stamps.
Key Pacing Note: Keep rug time active with tactile gestures and body shapes!
