💡 Keep this chart on your desk! Use these 4 steps to crack any STAAR place value question.
1
Unconventional Decomposing (TEKS 3.2A)
Standard Way:
14,205 = 1 ten thousand + 4 thousands + 2 hundreds + 5 ones
⚠️ The STAAR Trick Way (Regrouping):
14,205 = 14 thousands + 2 hundreds + 5 ones
★ Tip: 10 hundreds = 1 thousand. If you see "12 hundreds", that is the same as "1 thousand and 2 hundreds"!
2
The "10 Times" Jump Rule (TEKS 3.2B)
Every time you move one place value column to the LEFT , the value of the digit is multiplied by 10 .
Ten Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones 70,000 7,000 700 70 7 70,000 is 10 × 7,000 7,000 is 10 × 700 700 is 10 × 70 70 is 10 × 7

Number Line Hop Method (TEKS 3.2C)
Step A: Find the Tick Mark Interval
Find two labeled numbers (e.g., 3,000 and 4,000).
Subtract them to find the total distance (1,000).
Count the spaces between the labels (e.g., 10 spaces).
Divide: 1,000 ÷ 10 = 100 per tick mark!
Step B: Climb and Count
Hop 1 From 3,000 → 3,100
Hop 2 From 3,100 → 3,200
Hop 3 From 3,200 → 3,300
4
The "Stack & Compare" Duel (TEKS 3.2D)
Never compare numbers sideways! Stack them vertically , lining up your ones, tens, and hundreds.
1. Stack & Line Up
4 5 , 3 9 0
4 5 , 2 9 9
➔
2. Compare Left to Right
✓ Ten-thousands are the same (4 = 4)
✓ Thousands are the same (5 = 5)
★ Compare Hundreds: 3 is bigger than 2!
➔
3. Write Symbol
45,390 > 45,299
