Crew Blueprint Lesson Plan Place Value Construction Crew
Tier 2/3 Small Group Instructional Blueprint • Grades 1–3
45-Minute Intervention
Domain Number & Base Ten
Group Size 3–5 Students
Primary Modality Concrete Manipulatives
Target Focus Compose & Decompose
Measurable IEP Objectives (CRA Aligned)
Concrete: Given concrete base-ten blocks (flats, rods, units), student will build two- and three-digit target numbers with 80% accuracy across 3 sessions.
Representational: Student will draw shorthand symbols (squares, lines, dots) matching expanded form blueprints (e.g., \(200 + 40 + 7 = 247\)).
Abstract / Decomposition: When prompted to "trade down," student will decompose 1 ten into 10 ones or 1 hundred into 10 tens with verbal and tactile cueing.
Concrete Crew Toolkits (Per Student)
Flats (100s): 4-6 green/blue 100-squares per child.
Rods (10s): 15-20 yellow/green ten-rods for building & trading.
Units (1s): 20 single yellow/red unit cubes.
High-Frequency Pitfalls
Digit Reversal in Decades: Writing 52 as "25" or building 2 rods and 5 units instead of 5 rods and 2 units.
Overcounting Units: Counting a ten-rod by ones instead of counting by 10s unitarily.
Zero Place-Holder Blindspot: Missing the zero in numbers like 204 (writing "24" or building without the empty tens column).
Prompting Hierarchy
Independent: "Check your blueprint order."
Gestural / Visual: Point directly to the place value column header on the student's mat.
Verbal Direct: "How many tens are in the tens place? Count your rods by tens."
Tactile / Hand-over-Hand: Guide student to swap ten unit cubes for one solid ten rod.

Small Group Instructional Protocol (45 Min)
Phased Explicit Delivery
1. Tool Inspection & Tactile Warm-Up (8 Mins)
Concrete Phase
Crew Routine: Provide each student with their toolkit. Ask students to pick up a unit cube and say: "Unit = 1 small brick." Next, hold up a rod: "Ten units snap together to make 1 steel beam (Ten)." Line up 10 unit cubes side-by-side with a rod to physically prove equivalency.
Choral Response: "10 ones make 1 ten! 10 tens make 1 hundred flat!"
2. Guided Blueprint Build (12 Mins)
I Do / We Do
Project Slide 3 or reveal Order Card #1: Target Number 43 .
Analyze: "The blueprint calls for 4 tens and 3 ones."
Place & Build: Students lay 4 rods in the Beam column, 3 unit cubes in the Brick column.
Count aloud: Point and chant: "10, 20, 30, 40... 41, 42, 43!"
Level-Up: Introduce 3-digit order: 135 (1 flat, 3 rods, 5 units). Model vocal emphasis on hundreds.
3. Demolition & Trading Lab (12 Mins)
Decomposition
Explain the Demolition Trade Rule : "Sometimes the builder runs out of bricks and must demolish a beam!"
Decomposing Tens: Student builds 30 with 3 rods. Prompt: "Demolish 1 rod! Take 10 unit cubes." Result: 2 rods + 10 units = 30.
Decomposing Hundreds: Student builds 200 with 2 flats. Prompt: "Demolish 1 flat! Take 10 ten-rods." Result: 1 flat + 10 rods = 200.
4. Station Game & Exit Check (13 Mins)
You Do / Assess
Transition pairs to the Demolition Depot Game while the teacher administers the 2-problem Site Blueprint Exit Check individually using tactile blocks.
Individualized Adaptations
Fine Motor & Sensory Accommodations
Use textured sensory mats with raised borders to keep cubes from rolling away.
Provide jumbo interlocking base-ten blocks for students with grasp difficulties.
Use high-contrast colored mats (Yellow=Tens, Red=Ones) matching block colors.
ELL & Speech Scaffolds
Use sentence frames: "There are ___ hundreds, ___ tens, and ___ ones. The total is ___."
Pair words with gestural icons: Flat (flat palms), Rod (vertical pointer finger), Unit (pinching finger and thumb).

Hands-on Trading Mat
Demolition Rule: You can break a 10-rod into 10 unit cubes, or break a 100-flat into 10 ten-rods. The blocks change shape, but the total value is equal !
Trade Challenge #1: Decomposing Tens Target Value: 35
Build 35 with 3 rods and 5 units. Now, demolish 1 rod into 10 single units.
Standard Build:
3 Rods = 30
5 Units = 5
Total = 35
After Demolishing 1 Rod:

Units now
Total Value =
Trade Challenge #2: Decomposing Hundreds Target Value: 240
Build 240 with 2 flats and 4 rods. Demolish 1 flat into 10 rods.
Standard Build:
2 Flats (200)
4 Rods (40)
0 Units (0)
After Demolishing 1 Flat:
