Notes & Guided Practice: Transformations
Name: __________________________
Date: ___________________________
1. Core Vocabulary
Transformation: A process that changes a figure's position, size, or shape.
Rigid Motion: A transformation that preserves distance and angle measures. The size and shape stay the SAME.
Pre-Image: The original figure (labeled with letters: A, B, C).
Image: The resulting figure (labeled with prime notation: A', B', C').
2. Translations (The "Slide")
A translation moves every point of a figure the same distance in the same direction.
Algebraic Rule
(x, y) → (x + a, y + b)
• + a : Slide Right | - a : Slide Left
• + b : Slide Up | - b : Slide Down
Is it Rigid?
Yes! The pre-image and image are congruent (same size and shape).
Orientation
The orientation of the vertices remains exactly the same.
GP Practice 1: Graphing a Translation
A B C
Translate Triangle ABC using the rule:
(x, y) → (x - 5, y + 2)
Step 1: Write New Coordinates
A (1, -1) → A' (____, ____)
B (3, -1) → B' (____, ____)
C (2, 1) → C' (____, ____)
3. Reflections (The "Flip")
A reflection flips a figure over a line called the line of reflection. Each point is the same distance from the line.
Over the x-axis
(x, y) → (x, -y)
x stays same, y flips
Over the y-axis
(x, y) → (-x, y)
y stays same, x flips
Key Properties of Reflections
Rigid Motion: Reflections are rigid; the image is congruent to the pre-image.
Orientation: The orientation of vertices is reversed (flipped).
GP Practice 2: Reflecting a Quadrilateral
J K L M
Step 1: Write New Coordinates
J (-3, 3) → J' (____, ____)
K (-1, 3) → K' (____, ____)
L (-1, 1) → L' (____, ____)
M (-3, 1) → M' (____, ____)
Check point:
How many units away is point J from the y-axis? ______ units.
How many units away will J' be from the y-axis? ______ units.
Independent Practice
1
Identify the Transformation
T T'
Describe the transformation shown above:
Write the algebraic rule:
(x, y) → (____________)
2
Properties & Reasoning
Point P is at (5, -2). If it is reflected over the x-axis, and then translated using the rule (x+3, y-4), where will the final image P'' be located?
Show your work:
P'' (_____, _____)
3
Coordinate Challenge
Quadrilateral WXYZ has vertices:
W(-4, 5), X(-1, 5), Y(-1, 2), Z(-4, 2)
Reflect WXYZ over the y-axis.
What are the coordinates of Y'?
Y' (____, ____)
Does reflecting over the y-axis change the size of the shape? Why?
4
Real World Vector
A chess piece starts at position (2, 2) on a grid. A player moves it 3 squares left and 5 squares up. What is the algebraic rule for this translation?
(x, y) → (____________)
Where is the final position of the piece?

Transformation Reference Guide
Translation
The "Slide"
Every point moves the SAME distance and the SAME direction.
Algebraic Rule
(x, y) → (x + a, y + b)
+ a / - a
Horizontal (L / R)
+ b / - b
Vertical (U / D)
Pro Tip
Orientation stays exactly the same. No turns or flips!
Reflection
The "Flip"
A figure flips over a Line of Reflection. Points are equidistant from the line.
over x-axis
(x, -y)
over y-axis
(-x, y)
Warning
Orientation is reversed. It’s a mirror image!
Big Idea
RIGID MOTION
Both preserve size and shape. Pre-image and Image are always congruent!
