Market Mayhem Teacher GuideMarket Mayhem Teacher Facilitation Guide GRADE 6-8 Mathematics & Financial Literacy GAME OVERVIEW Market Mayhem is a high-energy simulation where students work in "Vendor Teams" to manage inventory, calculate complex totals (including sales tax), and provide accurate change to "Customers" (other students or the teacher). LEARNING OBJECTIVES Calculate totals for multiple items with varying prices. Apply percentage-based sales tax (8%) to totals. Calculate change from various bill denominations ($10, $20, $50, $100). Practice the "counting up" method for making change. MATERIALS NEEDED • Vendor Menu Cards (1 per team) • Transaction Ledgers (1 per team) • Play Money (Bills and Coins) • Calculators (optional, for verification) • Timer/Stopwatch PREPARATION Divide the class into teams of 3-4 (Vendors). Assign roles: The Cashier (calculates total/tax), The Banker (manages cash drawer), and The Checker (verifies calculations). Distribute play money to the "Banker" ($100 in mixed small bills and coins). How to Play 1 The Order Customers (Teacher or designated students) approach a Vendor and order 2-4 items from their Menu Card. 2 The Math The Cashier finds the subtotal. Then, they apply 8% Sales Tax to find the Grand Total. 3 The Change The Customer hands over a large bill. The Banker must calculate and count out the change exactly. Victory Condition: The team with the most accurate Transaction Ledger at the end of the session wins "Top Vendor"! For Middle Schoolers, focus on the "8% Tax Challenge" to keep rigor high. Add $5.00 → $20.00 Total Change: $5.65 Differentiation & Extensions Scaffolding (Support) Provide a "Tax Chart" for common subtotals. Allow calculators for the tax but require mental math for counting back change. Challenge (Extension) Introduce "Coupons" (e.g., 15% off) or "Double Tax" for luxury items. Have students calculate the tip (e.g., 18% or 20%) for food service items.
