Staff Guide
Haunted Math Quest • Leveled Prompting Framework & Facilitation Scripts
Intervention & Inclusion
The Golden Rule of Prompting (Least-to-Most Support):
Always pause 5–7 seconds after presenting a problem or asking a question before stepping in. Move down the levels only if the student cannot proceed after wait time. Give the minimum prompt necessary for success.
The 4-Level Prompt Hierarchy
Level 1 Lowest
Indirect Verbal / Pause
General non-directive cues to prompt re-reading and thinking.
“What is happening in this spooky story? Re-read sentence 1.”
Level 2 Low-Mid
Directed Clue Question
Narrows focus to mathematical action or relationship.
“Are we putting items together, or taking some away?”
Level 3 Mid-High
Visual / Strategy Scaffold
Offers part-whole bar, base-ten sketch, or T/O chart.
“Let's sketch a Part-Part-Whole box. Is 73 the total or a part?”
Level 4 Highest
Direct Modeling (Think-Aloud)
Explicit step-by-step demonstration; student repeats.
“Watch me: 3 ones minus 6 ones isn't enough. We trade 1 ten...”
Script 1: Guiding Operation Selection (+ or −)
Use on every problem
Step 1: Read
Para: “Read the story out loud (or follow along as I read). Picture the movie in your head. What is happening?” (Wait 5s)
Step 2: Action
Para: “Are the items growing / coming together , or are they getting taken away / being compared ?”
If Student says “Growing / Combining”:
“Yes! When we combine groups, what sign do we use? Go ahead and circle the plus sign.”
If Student says “Losing / Left over”:
“Spot on! Some were taken away. What operation finds what's left? Circle the minus sign.”
Script 2: Defeating the “Keyword Trap” (Problems 9 & 19)
High Misconception Area
The Trap: Student hears “How many more ” and immediately adds 94 + 58.
Level 1 Cue: “Does Oliver get Ava's bones, or are we lining them up to see the difference between them?”
Level 2 Clue: “We are comparing two amounts. Who has more? (Oliver). To find how much bigger his suit is, do we add or subtract?”
