Bakery Teacher Guide Fraction Bakery
Teacher Guide & Facilitation Plan
Grades 5-6
Learning Objective
Students will apply the "Easiest Common Denominator" (ECD) method to add fractions with unlike denominators in a real-world culinary context.
Materials Needed
Fraction Bakery Slides
Bakery Recipe Cards (1 set per group/pair)
Bakery Order Worksheet (1 per student)
Calculators (optional for final verification)
Lesson Timeline (45 Minutes)
5 MIN
Warm-Up: Kitchen Math
Display the warm-up slide. Ask students about their cooking experiences.
"What happens if a recipe calls for 1/2 cup sugar and 1/3 cup brown sugar? Can we just add the tops? Why or why not?"
5 MIN
Video Viewing
Watch the "Math Antics - ECD" video (Timestamp: 2:17-3:35).
Teaching Tip:
Pause at 2:42 to point out the "Whole Fraction" (3/3). Explain that multiplying by a whole fraction is like multiplying by 1—it changes the look but not the value.
25 MIN
Main Activity: The Fraction Bakery
Students work in pairs to fulfill "Bakery Orders." They must calculate total dry and wet volumes for three different recipes.
Process Requirements
Use the ECD method (denominators product).
Show the "Whole Fraction" multiplication step.
Add the resulting "Like Fractions."
Success Criteria
Common denominators are correct.
Numerators are adjusted correctly.
Totals are accurately calculated.

Extension: Doubling the Recipe
Ask the challenge question: "If you double the recipe, do you need to find a new common denominator?"
Answer: No. Doubling a fraction keeps the same denominator or simplifies. The relationship between the two ingredients remains the same.
Answer Key
Recipe 1: Blueberry Muffins
Dry: 1/2 + 2/3 = 3/6 + 4/6 = 7/6 cups
Wet: 1/4 + 1/5 = 5/20 + 4/20 = 9/20 cups
Recipe 2: Sourdough Loaf
Dry: 3/4 + 1/3 = 9/12 + 4/12 = 13/12 cups
Wet: 2/5 + 1/2 = 4/10 + 5/10 = 9/10 cups
Recipe 3: Double Choc Brownies
Dry: 1/2 + 3/8 = 8/16 + 6/16 = 14/16 cups (or 7/8)
Wet: 1/3 + 2/7 = 7/21 + 6/21 = 13/21 cups

Baking Up Solutions with ECD
Warm-Up: Kitchen Math
"A recipe calls for 1/2 cup of white sugar and 1/3 cup of brown sugar."
How much total sugar is that?
Can you just add the denominators (2+3=5)? Why or why not?

Swapping Denominators
Multiplying Across
The ECD Method
1
Identify
Find the denominators of both fractions.
2
Swap & Multiply
Multiply each by a "Whole Fraction" using the OTHER denominator.
3
Add Like Parts
Now that denominators are the same, just add the tops!
Today's Order: The Bakery
Your Task
Grab a set of Recipe Cards.
Find the total Dry Volume (Flour + Sugar).
Find the total Wet Volume (Milk + Oil).
Show your "Whole Fraction" multiplication steps!
"Accuracy is the secret ingredient!"

Remember the ECD Procedure:
1. Multiply the bottom numbers for the Common Denominator. 2. Multiply each fraction by a Whole Fraction (e.g., 3/3 or 5/5). 3. Add the numerators!
