Core Gameplay Loop
1
Groove & Wander
Start upbeat music. Students walk, dance, or tip-toe through open classroom space holding their Student Claim Card.
2
Music Stops = Freeze Pose!
Pause music instantly. Every student must freeze like a statue. Zero movement or talking allowed!
3
Teacher Calls Fact or Sum
Draw a card from the Calling Deck (e.g., "7 + 8!" or "Target 10!"). Announce loudly.
4
Claim & Prove
Students holding the matching card raise it high and shout "FREEZE MATCH!". Class checks answer together with a clap.
Quick Tip: Swap Cards!
Every 3-4 rounds, call "Card Swap!" where students trade cards with a neighbor to practice new numbers.
3 Flexible Game Modes
Mode A: Number Hunter (Standard) Sum Claim
Students hold Sum Cards (e.g. 14, 15, 10). Teacher calls equation 7 + 7. Student holding 14 jumps and claims it!
Mode B: Equation Matcher (Reverse) Fact Claim
Students hold Equation Cards. Teacher calls a sum: "17!". Student holding 8 + 9 freezes in a hero pose and claims!
Mode C: Partner Freeze Pair-Up Making Ten
Give single digits (1-9). When music freezes, shout "MAKE 10!". Students must silently lock eyes and walk to their partner (e.g., 3 pairs with 7).
Quiet Classroom Management: Use hand signs! Thumbs up if the claimed answer is correct; hold up fingers if you have another strategy.
Teacher Calling Cheat-Sheet & Strategy Matrix
Use for instant fact prompts during game
DOUBLES (2x) Even Sums
5 + 5 = 10 6 + 6 = 12 7 + 7 = 14 8 + 8 = 16 9 + 9 = 18 10 + 10 = 20
Thinking cue: "Double it and look for even!"
NEAR DOUBLES (±1) Odd Sums
5 + 6 = 11 6 + 7 = 13 7 + 8 = 15 8 + 9 = 17 4 + 5 = 9 9 + 10 = 19
Thinking cue: "Double the smaller + 1 more!"
FRIENDS OF 10 Ten Friends
9 + 1 = 10 8 + 2 = 10 7 + 3 = 10 6 + 4 = 10 5 + 5 = 10 10 + 0 = 10
Thinking cue: "Rainbow ten pairs!"
Movement Fun
Announce freeze styles before each song: "Freeze like an astronaut", "Freeze like a tree", or "Freeze balancing on one foot".
Differentiate
For developing learners, provide dot arrays or ten-frame cards. For an extension, have claimants state the related subtraction fact!
Accountability
Follow up with the Freeze Fact Tracker Worksheet where students record 8 facts they witnessed or solved during play.

Strategy Talk: Explain Your Math Brain
A. How does knowing the double 7 + 7 = 14 help you quickly solve the near double 7 + 8?
B. When the teacher calls "TARGET 10!", name two different pairs of addends you can use to claim ten:
