Decimal Duel Facilitation Guide Decimal Duel
Facilitation Guide
Grade: 6th Grade
Subject: Mathematics
Duration: 40 Minutes
Learning Objective
Students will apply decimal-to-fraction conversion to compare values and determine winners in a competitive gameplay setting.
Key Vocabulary
Decimal: Non-whole number.
Fraction: Part of a whole.
Simplify: Reducing to lowest terms.
GCF: Greatest Common Factor.
Materials Needed
Mixed Decimal/Fraction Cards (1 deck per pair)
Battle Math Worksheets (1 per student)
Projection System for Slides & Video
Scissors (if cards aren't pre-cut)
Lesson Flow
05 min
Warm-up: The Number Line
Students draw a number line (0 to 1) and place 0.5 and 1/2. Discuss why they land in the same spot. Goal: Reinforce that decimals and fractions are "twins"—different names for the same value.
05 min
Video Viewing: The 3-Step Method
Watch the 'Example 2' (0.375) section of the video. Pause at 2:44 to ask: "How many zeros will our multiplier have this time?" Use the Discussion Anchors in the slide deck.
25 min
Main Activity: Decimal Duel Game
Students play in pairs using the Clash Cards .
Both players flip a card simultaneously.
To determine the winner, they must convert one card to match the format of the other on their Battle Math Worksheet .
High value wins the round and takes both cards.
In disputes, use the video's 3-step method to prove the conversion.
05 min
Closure: Reflective Battle
"Which format (decimal or fraction) was easier to compare? Why?"
Discuss common GCFs found during simplification (5, 25, 125).
Common Stumbling Blocks
The "Multiplier" Error
Students often default to multiplying by 10 regardless of the decimal place. Emphasize counting the digits after the decimal to determine \(10^n\).
Premature Finish
Students may stop at \(375/1000\) and not simplify. Remind them that comparing is much easier when fractions are in their simplest form.

Warm-up Battle
1. Draw a number line from 0 to 1 in your notebook.
2. Place 0.5 and 1/2 on the line.
What do you notice about their locations? Are they friends or enemies?

1 Rewrite over 1
2 Multiply by \(10^n\)
3 Simplify
Game Rules: War!
01
Split the deck. Both players flip one card at the same time.
02
To see who wins, convert one card so they match formats.
03
The player with the higher value takes both cards!
04
If it's a tie... DOUBLE DUEL! Flip three cards face down and one up.
