DAY 1
Operation Detectives
Introduce "clue words" for basic operations. Use the Operation Detective Organizer to dissect simple store scenarios (e.g., "Buying 3 apples" vs "Giving back 25 cents").
DAY 2
The Coin Counter
Focus on mixed coin identification and value. Use real coins/manipulatives to build amounts shown on the Pocket Change Practice sheet. Practice counting from largest to smallest value.
DAY 3
The Budget Check
Introduce the "Comparison Step." Students count their coins and compare to a "Price Tag." Use the Can I Buy It? Task Cards for rotating station practice.
DAY 4
Corner Store Simulation
Integrated practice. Students role-play shopkeepers and customers using Shopkeeper Stories . Prompt students to identify the operation before calculating totals.
DAY 5
Mastery Assessment
Formative assessment using the Mastery Tracking Sheet . Observe students completing 5 mixed problems independently, noting the number of prompts used for each.
Prompting & Scaffolding
The "Three Prompt" Rule
Based on student IEP objectives, track prompts to ensure < 3 per task.

"What do you need to do first?" or "Look at the clue words again."
2 Direct Verbal / Visual
"Point to the quarters." or "Is 'altogether' adding or subtracting?"

Physically moving a coin into a group or circling the operation symbol for the student.
Instructional Tips
Coin Counting
Always teach students to sort coins by size/value before counting. Use a "Hairy Money" visual or touch-points if the student struggles with mental addition.
Operation Choice
Ask the student: "Is the number going to get bigger or smaller?" Bigger usually means addition/multiplication. Smaller means subtraction/division.
The Budget Comparison
Teach the phrase: "Is my money more than the price?" If Yes = Buy. If No = Not enough.
Differentiation
For students needing more support, limit coin types to just pennies and dimes to focus on base-10 addition before introducing nickels and quarters.
