Learning Objective

Students will master the conversion of word problems into geometric diagrams. By the end of this lesson, students will accurately identify Radius (R), Vertical Height (H), and Slant Height (L) from text and choose the correct formula for the requested calculation.

Warm-up: Cone Pictionary

Students use the Master Draftsman Paper. Describe "Radius," "Slant Height," and "Apex" verbally without showing images. Students draw based on your words.

Play the video. CRITICAL: Pause at the following timestamps to allow students to sketch the cone and predict dimensions before the narrator reveals them.

Ask: "Identify the shape formed by R, H, and L. Why does the Pythagorean theorem apply?"

Ask students to calculate the Slant Height on their draft paper before the narrator does.

Ask: "Can we plug 25 directly into the volume formula? Why or why not?"

Ask: "What is the most common mistake students make when seeing 'Diameter = 12'?"

Main Activity: Word Problem Translation

Distribute the Word Problem Sheet. Students work independently to translate text into diagrams. Emphasize that they are mapping the problem, not just solving for the final number.

Students swap sheets. They must check if their partner's labels (R, H, L) match the text and if the selected formula is correct for the question asked.

1. The Sugar Shocker (Waffle Cone)

Data: H = 15cm, R = 4cm. Task: Capacity (Volume).

Formula: V = (1/3)π(4)²(15) = 80π cm³

2. Party Planner Pro (Glitter Hat)

Data: H = 10", L = 12". Task: Cover sides (Lateral Area).

Note: Must find R first: R² = 12² - 10² = 44. R = √44 ≈ 6.63"

Formula: LA = π(√44)(12) ≈ 79.6π sq in

3. Construction Zone (Sand Pile)

Data: D = 20ft (R = 10), H = 6ft. Task: Total surface (Surface Area).

Note: Must find L first: L² = 10² + 6² = 136. L = √136 ≈ 11.66'

Formula: SA = π(10)² + π(10)(√136) ≈ 100π + 116.6π ≈ 216.6π sq ft

4. The Rain Collector (Teepee)

Data: R = 3m, L = 5m. Task: Water volume (Volume).

Note: Must find H first (3-4-5 triple): H = 4m.

Formula: V = (1/3)π(3)²(4) = 12π m³
