What is Alchemy?
Equivalent Expressions
Two expressions that have the same value, no matter which number you substitute for the variable.
3(x + 2) = 3x + 6
Simplifying Expressions
The process of writing an expression in the most efficient and compact way possible.
2x + 4 + 3x → 5x + 4
The Power of Distribution
The Distributive Property allows us to multiply a single term by two or more terms inside a set of parentheses.
1 Identify the "Multiplier" outside.
2 Multiply it by every term inside.
4(2x - 5)
Step 1
4 × 2x = 8x
Step 2
4 × (-5) = -20
8x - 20
Like Terms: The Same "DNA"
LIKE TERMS
Same variable AND same exponent.
3x -7x x
UNLIKE TERMS
Different variables or exponents.
4x 4y 4
Blueprint for Success:
-
- Identify terms with the same variable.
-
- Add or subtract their coefficients.
-
- Keep the variable and exponent exactly the same.

Mission Briefing
Equivalent expressions are mathematical "twins"—they look different but represent the same value. Simplify each expression below to reveal its true identity.
01
Simplify the expression to find its twin:
4(x + 5)
Twin Expression: ____________________
02
Simplify to reveal the twin:
3y + 2y + 8
Twin Expression: ____________________
03
Prove if these are twins:
2(3a - 4) and 6a - 8
Are they twins? (Circle): YES NO
04
Simplify to find the twin:
10b - 3b + 4
Twin Expression: ____________________
05
Simplify to find the twin:
5(w + 2) - 3
Twin Expression: ____________________
06
Which of these is NOT equivalent to 12x + 6?
6(2x + 1)
3(4x + 2)
10x + 2x + 6
18x
Not a twin: ____________________
07
MATCHING: Simplify each expression on the left to match its twin on the right.
2(x + 4)
→
5x - x + 3
→
3(2x - 1)
→
x + x + x + x
