Sequencing & Measuring
Goal
Independent Success
Prep Checklist
Pre-portion sticky items (honey/PB) if time is limited.
Check for nut/seed allergies (sub SunButter if needed).
Set up "Action Stations" for each student/group.
Have a handwashing station ready with soap/towels.
Print Visual Recipe Cards for each student.
Warm honey slightly to make it easier to pour.
Lesson Flow
1
Mini-Lesson: The Art of the Scoop
Demonstrate how to measure dry vs. wet ingredients. Show students how to "level off" the oats with a straight edge for accuracy.
"We want our measuring cup to look like a flat table, not a mountain!"
2
Recipe Execution: Follow the Map
Have students follow the Visual Recipe Card . Circulate to check for correct tool selection (e.g., using the Cup for oats, but the Spoon for vanilla).
Encourage students to "Check Off" each step on their card.
Monitor the "Mixing Phase" - it requires significant hand strength!
3
Reinforcement: Sequence Scramble
While the bites are chilling in the fridge, have students complete the Sequence Scramble Activity to reinforce the order of operations.
Scaffolding & Differentiation
For Students Needing Support:
Use Visual Prompting : Point to the icon on the recipe card that matches the physical tool on their table. Pre-measure all ingredients and focus solely on the sequencing of pouring/mixing .
For Advanced Learners:
Introduce Fractions : Ask "If we have 1/2 cup of chocolate chips, how many 1/4 cups would that be?" Have them write down one "Safety Improvement" they noticed during the process.
