Mrs. Patterson immediately walked over with them, stood guard by the bench, and called the school nurse, Nurse Davis, on her two-way radio.

?

Counselor Pause & Ask (Class Discussion):

"Is telling Mrs. Patterson considered 'tattling' or 'reporting to keep people safe'? How can you tell the difference?"

Chapter 4: The Mystery Solved

Nurse Davis arrived wearing protective gloves. She carefully picked up the bag and examined it.

"Good detective work, Maya and Leo," Nurse Davis smiled warmly. "These are prescription blood pressure tablets that accidentally slipped out of a visiting grandparent's coat pocket earlier this morning. To an adult with high blood pressure, this medicine is helpful. But to a growing child, even a single pill could have been very dangerous."

Mrs. Patterson high-fived both students. "Because you two followed the rules—STOP, DON'T TOUCH, WALK AWAY, and TELL AN ADULT—our entire playground stayed safe today."

Leo smiled at Maya. "From now on, I only take medicine from my trusted adults at home or Nurse Davis. We really are Safe Body Champions!"

Story Takeaways for Every Champion:

1. Look-Alikes

Medicine and dangerous chemicals can look identical to candy or juice.

2. Speak Up

Always tell a friend "STOP" if you see them reaching for unknown substances.

3. Trusted Adults

Reporting safety hazards protects everyone in the school family.

The Case of the Tricky Treat • Read-Aloud Story Page 2 of 2

Say: "If you ever see a pill or an unknown liquid at school, at the park, or even on the floor at home, you NEVER put it in your mouth to see what it tastes like. Even gummy vitamins are only healthy when an adult carefully measures them for you. Today, we are putting on our Safety Shield!"

Role-Play Coaching Prompts

Scenario: Friend Peer Pressure

A friend says: "Hey, try this candy my older brother gave me, it tastes sour and cool."

Response: "No thanks! I only eat snacks and take medicine from my trusted adults."

Scenario: Sibling Mistake

An older sibling tries to give you their headache tablet when your head hurts.

Response: "Stop! Let's wait for Mom or Dad. Medicine prescribed for you can make me sick."

Trauma-Informed Protocol & Handling Disclosures

If a student discloses substance misuse at home: Maintain a calm, neutral facial expression. Validate their feelings: "Thank you for sharing that with me. You are safe here, and I am glad you told me."

Follow District & Mandatory Reporting Guidelines: Do not interrogate or probe in front of classmates. Follow up privately after the lesson and notify designated child protection or administration officials according to state policy.

Hora del Cuento

Cuento: El misterio del dulce engañoso

Lectura Compartida

El misterio del dulce engañoso

Con Maya y Leo en la escuela

El misterio: Cuando Leo ve pastillas rojas junto a los columpios, ¿podrá Maya detenerlo a tiempo?

Preguntas para pensar y compartir

1. ¿Por qué las pastillas parecían dulces?

Eran brillantes y rojas, pero tenían números diminutos grabados.

¡No!

01

¡ALTO!

Congela tus manos. No toques, no pruebes ni levantes cosas desconocidas.

¡Manos Quietas!

02

¡Habla Fuerte!

03

ALÉJATE

Mueve tu cuerpo a un lugar seguro. Pon distancia entre tú y el peligro.

¡Da Pasos Atrás!

04

AVISA

Cuéntaselo a un adulto de confianza. ¡Avisar para proteger no es ser chismoso!

¡Pide Ayuda!

Juntos: ¡ALTO!

3. Adultos de Confianza

Reportar peligros protege a toda la familia escolar.
