Opposite Step
Foot-strike alignment & weight shift
| Stands stationary, or steps forward with throwing-side foot. | Steps forward with throwing foot OR step is tiny with zero weight shift. | Steps clearly with opposite foot, transferring weight forward toward target. | Steps powerfully with opposite foot, planting directly inline with target. |
|
Core Torque
Hip & torso rotation sequence
| No rotation. Chest faces target throughout throw, using only arm. | Hips and shoulders turn slightly, but remain locked together. | Hips rotate first, followed by shoulders turning toward target. | Full whip effect! Lower body drives hip opening, creating shoulder separation. |
|
Follow-Thru
Cross-body deceleration path
| No follow-through; arm stops immediately at release or recoils. | Arm drops straight down or sweeps outward; balance is lost easily. | Throwing arm sweeps across body, finishing near opposite thigh. | Complete finish. Back foot moves forward naturally with total, balanced control. |
|
Target Strike
x2
Consistent accuracy priority
| Hits landing zone/target only 1 out of 5 throws. | Hits landing zone/target 2 to 3 out of 5 throws. | Hits landing zone/target 4 out of 5 throws with good control. | Locked on! Hits landing zone/target 5 out of 5 times with master accuracy. |

Grade 4 Basketball Control & Ball-Handling Lesson Plan
Lesson 2
Unit: Athletic Aces
MA Comprehensive Health & PE Alignment
Standard 1 (Motor Skill Development): Dribbles a ball continuously with control while moving at varying speeds and directions under light defensive pressure, demonstrating mature form (finger pad contact, hip-to-knee height, head up).
Psychomotor
Dribble continuously with finger pads at hip-to-knee height while traveling at walking and jogging speeds without losing control.
Cognitive
Identify and explain the 3 main keys of dribbling control: finger-pad contact (no slapping), low height, and protective shielding.
Affective
Demonstrate safe spacing, respect for boundaries, and high-fives for partner progress during dynamic peer shadow drills.
Equipment Checklist
- 1 Size-5 basketball per student (or junior size)
- 24 Low-profile dome cones (different colors)
- whistle & digital pacing timer
- Clipboards + exit tickets for closing
Gym Spatial Setup
- Warm-up: Outer running loop around gym boundary.
- Main Drills: Grid of 6x6 meter squares (dome cones).
- Safety Rule: Maintain "2 arms-length distance" at all times.
8 Minutes
Warm-Up: Ready, Set, Bounce
Cardiovascular prep & basketball familiarity
Dynamic Movement Loop (5 mins): Students jog around the gym perimeter carrying their basketball in two hands. On teacher's whistle, they execute physical commands while running: "High Hold" (ball above head), "Side-to-Side" (hip-touch twists), or "Knee Tap" (brief stationary knee touches).
Ball Slaps & Circles (3 mins): Students assemble in their grid spots. Practice warm-up ball mechanics:
- Rhythmic slaps of the basketball using finger pads to wake up tactile receptors.
- Passing the ball around the waist, knees, and ankles (improving fingertip sensation).

Core Instructional Progression
Main Instruction
Progression 1: Glue Hand Basics (7 Mins) Stationary
Cues: "Push, don't slap!" Teach students that the ball should feel like it's glued to their hands. Practice stationary dribbling at hip-to-knee height. Activity: "Count to 20." Students count consecutive dribbles with their dominant hand, then swap to non-dominant.
Progression 2: Speed Shifters (8 Mins) Dynamic
Cues: "Change gears!" Students move through the grid using different speeds based on teacher commands: Gear 1: Walking; Gear 2: Jogging; Gear 3: Sprinting (high control). On double-whistle, freeze in a athletic low stance holding ball.
Progression 3: Shield & Scan (10 Mins) Defense Shield
Cues: "Shield on, eyes up!" Students form pairs. Partner A dribbles while keeping their body between the ball and Partner B (the shadow defender). Partner B gently waves a colored cone, and Partner A must shout out the color while keeping their dribble active.
Culminating Game: Chaos Arena
15 Minutes
Game Rules
All students dribble in the main gym arena. They must protect their own basketball while attempting to gently swipe away other students' balls.
*No body contact allowed. Keep shielding shoulder high.
Elimination-Free Format: If a student's basketball is swiped out of bounds, they do NOT sit out! Instead, they complete 5 stationary shadow-dribbles at the sideline and immediately re-enter the game. This maximizes active time and engagement!
Teacher Rule Tweaks (Levels): Every 3 minutes, introduce modifiers like "Non-Dominant Hand Only" or "Shrinking Boundary" to heighten coordination under stress.
Differentiation Strategy
Support: Use a lighter/larger playground ball to slow bounce rhythm. Allow 2-handed recovery bounces if needed.
Challenge: Attempt figure-8 leg wraps while walking or speed-up with cross-over maneuvers.
Closure & Exit Ticket
Gather in a semi-circle. Perform a 2-minute cool-down stretch.
Review Questions: Why do we use finger pads instead of palms? (Better touch control). Hand out the "Dribble Dominators Exit Ticket" for quick student self-assessments.
