Web Rescue Lesson Plan Pre-K Gross Motor & Early Math Lab
Spider Web Rescue
Dynamic Line Balance • One-to-One Counting • Spatial Reasoning
Target Age: Pre-K (3–5 yrs)
Duration: 40–45 Mins
Group Size: Whole + Stations
Gross Motor Focus
Dynamic balance along 2-inch tape lines, controlled heel-to-toe pacing, deep knee bend to retrieve objects without falling.
Math & Counting
Numeral recognition (1–10), 1-to-1 correspondence touching dots on rescued bugs, subitizing quantities 1–5.
Spatial Concepts
Navigating directional pathways: along , across , center , outer ring , and avoiding the empty floor "sticky gaps."
Gym / Classroom Floor Web Architecture
Setup Time: 8–10 Min
Tape Radius: 8–10 ft diameter
1
Spokes First: Lay 4 intersecting straight tape strips crossing at center hub (creates 8 radiating web lines).
2
Connect with 3 Rings: Inner ring (3 ft), middle ring (6 ft), outer ring (9 ft). Painter's tape or masking tape peels safely.
3
Scatter Rescue Bugs: Tape numbered bug cards face-up at line intersections. Keep blank floor areas as "Sticky Web Trap" zones.
Materials Checklist
2 rolls blue painters tape (1.5–2 in. wide)
10 laminated Numbered Bug Cards (1–10)
Student Bug Rescue Collection Jars / Mats
1 pair jumbo easy-grip tweezers per child (or gentle two-finger pincher hands)
Tambourine or chime for "Spider Freeze!" cue
Pre-K Safety & Body Control Rules
Bare feet or rubber sneakers: No slippery socks.
Airplane Arms: Keep arms wide for balance.
Traffic Rule: Maximum 4 children on web at once; all walkers travel clockwise around circular lines.
Gentle Squat: Bend knees, don't dive forward.
Phase 1: Circle Time Story & The Web Walkers Chant (8 Mins)
Gather on the carpet edge. Introduce puppet or picture of Silly Sam the Spider : "Sam spun a giant web to catch raindrops, but our garden bugs got stuck! We need Brave Web Walkers to balance along the strands and carry them back to safety!"
“Tiptoe forward, slow and light • Airplane arms held steady and bright! • One foot, two feet, on the strand • Rescue bugs with a gentle hand!”

Mission Execution & Learning Progressions
Activity Phases • Differentiated Challenges • Observational Rubric
Phase 2 to 4
Step-by-Step Mission Phases
Phase 2 • 7 Min
Warm-Up Stretch
Practice Spider Stretch movements on spot: 8-leg reach, web crawl, one-foot balance hold (count 1-2-3), and deep knee balance squat.
Phase 3 • 20 Min
The Bug Rescue Game
Students traverse lines to reach numbered bugs, squat to pick up one bug, and balance back along a spoke to place it into their Jar Mat.
Phase 4 • 8 Min
Count & Celebrate
Back at the rug, children touch each dot on their collected bugs: "1, 2, 3 ladybugs safe!" Compare bug counts and breathe slowly to cool down.
Levelled Game Progressions (Scaffolding During Play)
Level 1:
Free Pathfinder: Walk any tape line with both feet touching tape. Collect any bug card. Step off freely if balance wobbles, reset at outer rim.
Level 2:
Target Number Scout: Teacher or dice calls a specific number (e.g., "Rescue Bug Number 4!" ). Child searches web, tracks lines to find #4, and balances back.
Level 3:
The Sticky Spider Freeze: When chime rings, everyone freezes on one foot like a spider statue! When chime stops, resume tip-toe rescue.
Support & Modifications
Double-Wide Tape: Lay two parallel tape lines 6" apart for a wider runway.
Hand-Hold Spotter: Educator holds one hand while child focuses on foot placement.
Near Rescue: Place bugs on the outer ring so walking distance is shorter.
Numbers 1–3 Focus: Use bugs with high-contrast dots for early counters.
Extension & Challenge
Heel-to-Toe Precision: Must touch heel directly to opposite toe on every step.
Cargo Carry: Balance a small beanbag on head or back of hand while walking.
Side-Step Scuttle: Move sideways along circular web strands without crossing feet.
Sequential Rescue: Must find bugs in numerical order: 1, then 2, then 3.
Pre-K Formative Observation Checklist
Dynamic Balance
Walks 4+ consecutive steps on tape line with minimal stepping off.
Squat & Recover
Bends knees to grab bug from floor without falling onto hands.
1-to-1 Correspondence
Touches each dot once when counting rescued bugs aloud.
Spatial Awareness
Understands web boundaries and respects personal space of peers.
