Challenge 01 Myth
"Vaping is harmless because it's just water vapor."
The Truth:
Vapes do not produce water vapor; they produce an aerosol . This aerosol contains fine particles of nicotine, flavorings (like diacetyl, linked to lung disease), heavy metals (lead, nickel, tin), and volatile organic compounds. It is far from harmless and can cause significant lung inflammation.
Challenge 02 Myth
"Vaping helps people quit smoking traditional cigarettes."
The Truth:
While some adults use vapes as a cessation tool, the FDA has not approved any e-cigarette as a quit-smoking aid. For young people, the opposite is true: non-smoking teens who vape are significantly more likely to start smoking traditional cigarettes later in life. It often leads to "dual use" rather than quitting.
Challenge 03 Myth
"The nicotine in vapes isn't as addictive as the nicotine in cigarettes."
The Truth:
Nicotine is nicotine, and it is highly addictive regardless of the delivery method. In fact, many modern vapes use "nicotine salts," which allow for much higher concentrations of nicotine to be inhaled with less throat irritation, leading to faster and deeper addiction, especially in developing teenage brains.
Challenge 04 Myth
"Vaping only affects your lungs, not other parts of your body."
The Truth:
Nicotine affects the brain (interfering with memory, focus, and impulse control), the heart (increasing heart rate and blood pressure), and the circulatory system (narrowing arteries). It can also impact reproductive health and general immunity.
Facilitation Tips
• Focus on brain development : Explain that the brain is still developing until age 25, making it more vulnerable to nicotine's effects.
• Highlight marketing tactics : Discuss how flavors and sleek designs are specifically targeted at young people.
• Emphasize freedom : Frame addiction as a loss of control and freedom, which resonates strongly with high school students.
