Your Mission
As part of your CTE work-based learning curriculum, your team is authorized to audit, map, and document the safety preparedness of this automotive shop. You represent the facility's safety committee. Your duty is to identify safety compliance gaps, maintain high standards, and prepare the shop for safe, professional operations.
Assigned Team Roles
1. Safety Inspector
Leads the physical visual audit of all fire extinguishers and eyewash stations.
2. Mapping Specialist
Measures layout coordinates and designs the final safety & evacuation map.
3. Logistics Recorder
Coordinates inspection records and builds the corrective action database.
4. Project Manager
Enforces group safety protocols, handles schedule, and reports to instructor.
DANGER & MANDATORY SAFETY PARAMETERS
Students must ONLY perform visual, user-level facility inspections. Under NO circumstances should students ever service, recharge, repair, disassemble, test-spray, or manipulate valves on any fire extinguisher or safety equipment. If a physical defect is suspected, immediately list it as "Critical Defect" and report it to the instructor.

Inspection Protocols & Standards
Follow these exact industry-level guidelines to conduct your inspections. If any equipment fails a single check, mark it immediately as a deficiency on your checklist.
Protocol A: Fire Extinguishers (Visual Check)
Standard Checklist Items:
- Accessibility: Path to unit is clear (no tools, parts, or toolboxes blocking).
- Pressure Gauge: Needle must point squarely within green zone.
- Safety Seal: Plastic seal and pull pin must be fully intact.
- No Damage: Check hose, nozzle, and tank shell for corrosion, cracks, or dents.
Critical Deficiencies:
If needle is in RECHARGE or OVERCHARGED zones, if the safety pin is missing, or if the inspect tag has expired (>1 year), flag it immediately for instructor intervention.
Protocol B: Emergency Exits & Access Paths
Standard Checklist Items:
- Clear Pathway: Minimum 36-inch clearance. No scrap parts, fluids, or project cars.
- Panic Hardware: Exit doors must open smoothly from inside without keys.
- Illuminated Signs: "EXIT" sign must be lit, clear of grease, and visible.
Safety Watch:
In an active shop, toolboxes and tire machines easily shift into fire exit pathways. Evacuation routes must always be completely clear of rolling hazards.
Protocol C: Eyewash Station (Inspection & Flush)
Standard Checklist Items:
- Caps Intact: Dust covers must protect spray nozzles, popping off on activation.
- Actuator Paddle: Easy to press, moves without sticking or binding.
- Fluid Level / Expiry: Standard solutions must be within safe expiry dates.
District Rule Flush Check:
Perform district/campus routine flush if required (weekly/monthly). Ensure water flows cleanly without discoloration or rust sediment. Ensure drainage path is not clogged.
A Note on Inspection Tags
Every facility piece must have a visual log/tag attached. After inspection, the inspector must write their initial and current date on the paper tags. If a tag is completely full, note it on your digital report to request a blank replacement.

Post-Inspection Verification Questions

Project Pedagogy
This project introduces high school seniors to standard facility management and compliance procedures in professional automotive shops. By participating in the **Emergency Gear Guardians** program, students act as safety managers. This simulates real-world CTE work-based learning situations where technicians are personally accountable for shop safety under OSHA rules.
Suggested Project Pacing (3-Day Sequence)
Day 1: Handoff
Form teams of 4, assign roles, review safety parameters, complete and sign the Group Contract.
Day 2: Audit Shop
Teams inspect the shop, tag pass units, sketch the schematic safety layout, and list any defects.
Day 3: Report
Draft final maps, fill corrective action logs, submit safety concern slips, and get instructor sign-off.
Instructor Vigilance & Liability Parameters
Crucial Safety Principle: Students should only conduct visual inspections. Ensure that they do not tamper with active cylinders, charge valves, or pressure seals. In the event that a student identifies a critical defect (e.g., a low pressure gauge or missing lock pin), the instructor must take charge of physical inspections and submit a professional repair ticket.
Common Student Misconceptions
Wrong
"Pathways are clear enough." Students often ignore toolboxes, trash bins, or oil drainage pans if they are movable. Intervention: Reiterate that any object in the 36-inch exit path is an instant failure.
Wrong
"The gauge needle is near the green, it is fine." Close is not enough. Intervention: Insist that the dial needle must be strictly inside the green segment; otherwise, it is flagged as unsafe.

"We can fix the broken parts ourselves." Intervention: Explicitly ban student servicing of chemical safety apparatus. Only professional vendors are certified to recharge cylinders.
