Quarter 1 Curriculum Alignment
The following matrix details the key standards and progressive developmental skill targets for both primary (K-2) and upper elementary (3-5) bands during the first quarter of instruction.
Quarter One (1) — Elementary School
Timeline September – October (8 Weeks)
Unit Title Health and Fitness Foundations
Grade Band: K-2 (Primary Foundations)
Grade Band: 3-5 (Intermediate Application)
Key Standards Alignment
- NYS PE Standard 1 (Motor Skills) Demonstrate basic locomotor patterns (run, hop, gallop, skip) and initial underhand throwing/catching mechanics.
- NYS PE Standard 2 (Cognitive Concepts) Identify and apply boundaries, pathways (straight, curved, zig-zag), spatial levels, and movement speed.
- NYS PE Standard 4 (Social Behavior) Exhibit cooperation, follow class routines, play safely, and treat peers with dignity/respect.
- National Health Standard 1 (NHES) Identify healthy habits (hydration, eating fresh fruits/vegetables) and safe choices in the gym.
Key Standards Alignment
- NYS PE Standard 1 (Motor Skills) Apply locomotor agility and specific skill combinations (dribbling with hands/feet, passing under defensive pressure).
- NYS PE Standard 2 (Cognitive Concepts) Apply simple offensive/defensive strategies, sport-specific rules, and space utilization in small-sided gameplay.
- NYS PE Standard 3 & 4 (Fitness & Behavior) Analyze health-related fitness elements; communicate cooperatively, accept referee/coaching decisions, and guide peers.
- National Health Standard 5 (NHES) Deconstruct personal healthy habits (tracking daily hydration, rest, and physical activity).
Core Skills & Concepts
- • Locomotor Fluency: Executing clean hops, jumps, gallops, and skips on cue.
- • Spatial Awareness: Halting immediately on safety signals; avoiding contact in open play.
- • Routines & Directions: Fast transitions between stations; safe equipment setup/cleanup.
- • Sportsmanship Rules: Encouraging peers verbally; shaking hands with teammates.
- • Hydration Concept: Explaining why the body needs pure water instead of high-sugar drinks.
Core Skills & Concepts
- • Strategic Dribbling: Controlling soccer ball or volleyball while scanning open space.
- • Tactical Play: Maintaining spatial distance; passing ahead of moving teammates.
- • Peer Coaching: Correcting a partner's throwing form using respectful, precise verbal feedback.
- •Sportsmanship Encouraging peers verbally; shaking hands with teammates.
- • Safety Play: Inspecting equipment and maintaining spatial awareness to prevent injury.

Physical Education & Health Learning Trajectory
Review standard developmental shifts from physical literacy and movement discovery (K-2) to tactical, competitive, and health-conscious execution (3-5).
NYS PE Standard 1: Motor Skills & Movement Patterns
K-2 Foundations:
Discovery of isolated skills. Focus on executing correct mechanics of simple jumps, underhand pitches, static balances, and hop sequences.
3-5 Complex Application:
Skill integration and dynamic pacing. Combining throwing, catching, and footwork during game-like simulations under active defensive pressure.
NYS PE Standard 2: Cognitive Concepts & Strategy
K-2 Foundations:
Basic definitions. Recognizing self-space, changing direct lines of movement, navigating simple obstacles, and acknowledging basic boundaries.
3-5 Complex Application:
Tactical execution. Understanding off-the-ball spacing, executing deliberate plays, setting defensive walls, and manipulating court size.
NYS PE Standard 3 & NHES 1: Wellness & Hydration
K-2 Foundations:
Physiological awareness. Associating rapid heartbeat with exertion. Distinguishing healthy whole foods from high-sugar, low-nutrition alternatives.
3-5 Complex Application:
Independent planning. Tracking physical performance indicators. Designing personal wellness challenges tracking healthy meals, deep sleep hours, and water intake.
NYS PE Standard 4 & NHES 5: Sportsmanship & Decision-Making
K-2 Foundations:
Rule adherence. Cooperating safely with peers, sharing communal gear, resolving minor conflicts using school-wide words, and enjoying team settings.
3-5 Complex Application:
Leadership and self-regulation. Supporting teammates constructively during stressful losses, respecting diverse skill levels, and applying peer coaching ideas.
