Inclusive Games Lesson Plan
PE Lesson Plan 30 Minutes Capture the Flag
Unit: Cooperative Invasion Games
All-In Capture the Flag
An inclusive invasion game powered by 2 flag balls, a dividing boundary, and zero-elimination teamwork
Format: Minimal Equipment (2 Balls)
Field / Court: Gym or field divided by a clear center boundary line; two end vaults
Equipment: Only 2 balls (foam, playground, or bell balls) representing each flag
Safety Priority: Gentle two-finger shoulder tag only; eyes up at the center line
Movement Mastery
Control speed and body space when approaching the center line; carry, pass, or roll with precision.
Cooperative Support
Prioritize freeing captured teammates from the Recharge Zone before making solo scoring runs.
Strategic Mindset
Identify when to defend, when to escort the flag carrier, and how to communicate clearly with squad mates.
S.T.E.P. Inclusion Quick Lens:
Space: Safe boundary buffers Task: Roll / pass / carry flag options Equipment: High-contrast sensory ball People: Multi-role team squads
Phase 1
Line Mirror & Pulse Jog (Simplified Warm-Up)
0:00 – 6:00 (6 Mins)
Simple 2-Step Routine (10-second setup, zero confusion):
- "Jog & Glide" (30 sec): Students jog, walk, or wheel freely within their home half.
- "Line Freeze!" (Whistle call): All move to the center boundary line, face across to a partner on the other team, and mirror their quick stretch (overhead reach, torso twist, or ankle circles for 10 sec).
- Repeat 3 cycles, gradually picking up the tempo.
Quick Whistle Cues: • "Jog & Glide!" • "Line Freeze & Mirror!" • "Air High-Five!"
Mobility & Seated Movers: Mirror upper-body stretches (arm swings, shoulder rolls, cactus arms).
Visual Hand Signal: Raise two open palms for "Line Freeze", circular wave for "Jog & Glide".
Energy Level Tiers: Students choose their speed: easy walking, power-stepping, or light jogging.
Phase 2
Vault Dash Relay (Grab, Go & Handoff)
6:00 – 12:00 (6 Mins)
Crystal-Clear Relay Flow (Direct flag practice with zero downtime):
- Setup: Place each team's flag ball directly on the center boundary line. Teams line up behind their home baseline.
- Round 1 (Retrieve): Player 1 jogs/wheels to the line, scoops the ball, brings it home, and gives a high-five handoff to Player 2.
- Round 2 (Return): Player 2 runs the ball back to the center line, places it down, and sprints home to tag Player 3.
- Continuous rotation—every student gets multiple hands-on reps handling and securing the flag!
Coaching Focus: • Two hands on ball • Clear eyes on handoff • Celebrate each runner
Rolling Option: Students may roll the ball smoothly along the floor to their teammate instead of carrying.
Buddy Escort: Pair students to run or wheel side-by-side to retrieve and deliver the ball together.
Distance Flexibility: Shorten running line for students with fatigue or mobility considerations.

Part II Culminating Game & Structured Reflection
Capture the Flag • 2 Balls & Boundary
Phase 3
All-In Capture the Flag (Culminating Game)
12:00 – 24:00 (12 Mins)
Court Layout & Objective: Center line divides the playing area. Team Green on Side A; Team Gold on Side B. Each team places their flag ball inside a rear "Vault" circle. The objective is to retrieve the opponent's ball and cross back over the center line. Defenders may only tag opponents who cross onto their defensive side.
1. Infiltrators
Cross boundary to retrieve flag or draw defenders away through deceptive movement.
2. Rescuers
Enter opponent Recharge Zone to liberate captured teammates with immunity walk-backs.
3. Border Guards
Patrol own half; apply gentle 2-finger shoulder tags to invaders. Must stay 3ft from Vault.
4. Vault Navigators
Seated or stationed near home vault; give verbal radar callouts and receive long passes.
Zero Sitting Out: Tagged players walk to the opponent's "Recharge Zone" (a corner circle or key). While waiting for a rescue, they perform gentle arm circles or torso twists. Once tagged by a rescuer, both walk back to their side holding a hand up in immunity ("Free Walk-Back").
Phase 4
Boundary Reset & Strategy Debrief
24:00 – 30:00 (6 Mins)
Calming Physical Sequence (3 Mins):
- Boundary Stroll: Teams slowly walk the center line together.
- Flag Inhales: 4 deep belly breaths holding imaginary flag ball.
- Shoulder & Calf Stretch: Gentle standing or seated release.
Tactical Reflection Prompts (3 Mins):
- "How did rescuing teammates help your team stay competitive?"
- "Why was rolling or passing the ball as effective as running it?"
- "Which role made you feel most helpful to your squad today?"
S.T.E.P. Differentiation Matrix for Capture the Flag
S • Space: Create a 5-foot "Safe Moat" around the flag vault where defenders cannot enter; widen sideline transit corridors.
T • Task: Permit rolling the flag across the line; allow buddy escorts; enable shadow tagging (tagging within 2ft) for non-contact.
E • Equipment: Use high-contrast brightly colored foam balls; use audible bell balls for visually impaired players.
P • People: Assign paired partnerships (runner + navigator); ensure every student experiences both attacking and defending roles.
Formative Observation Checklist: Capture the Flag Competencies
Controlled Boundary Navigation
Proactive Teammate Rescuing
Safe Two-Finger Tagging
Collaborative Role Rotation
