The Superhero Code
Safety Protocol
Adult Sidekick
Never cook alone! Your adult sidekick must supervise you the entire time the stove is on.
Rule #1: Team Up
Chef Gear
Tie back long hair, roll up baggy sleeves, and always wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet.
Rule #2: Suit Up
Clear Zone
Keep dish towels, paper towels, and plastic toys away from the hot stove. They can melt or catch fire!
Rule #3: Clear Out

Mastering the Flames
Heat Control
💧 Low
Simmer & Melt
Gentle warmth for melting butter, chocolate, or warming up rich sauces. Tiny bubbles or no bubbles at all!
💡 Good for: Chocolate & Milk
🍳 Medium
Sauté & Sizzle
The workhorse level! Perfect for cooking eggs, grilling cheese sandwiches, or cooking vegetables evenly.
💡 Good for: Pancakes & Eggs
🔥 High
Boil & Sear
Super fast heat! Used exclusively for bringing water to a rapid boil for pasta or searing meats quickly.
⚠️ Danger: Never leave High unattended!
Always match the burner size to your pan size! Slide 3 of 8
The Safe Zone
Pan Positioning
The Handle Rule
Always turn pot and pan handles **inward** toward the side or back of the stove.
Why? If a handle points out over the floor, anyone walking by can easily bump it and spill boiling hot food!
The Hot Spot Rule
Make sure your pan sits **perfectly centered** directly on top of the burner.
Why? Off-center pans heat unevenly, can tip over easily, or allow open flames to rise up the side of the pan.
Keep handles out of reach of curious pets or toddlers! Slide 4 of 8
The Watchful Chef
Timing & Pacing
Eyes on the Prize
Never walk away from a burner that is turned on. Cooking is fast—accidents happen when you look away!
Use a Digital Timer
Always set a timer. This reminds both you and your adult sidekick when to check, flip, or stir.
Steam Shield Lids
Always lift a pot lid **away** from your face. The escaping steam is super hot and can burn you!
Hear the Timer?
When the alarm goes off, don't run! Calmly walk to the stove, stand back, and have your adult sidekick turn the dial to OFF.
Safety First, Deliciousness Second
If you must leave the kitchen, turn the burner off first! Slide 5 of 8
The Chef's Arsenal
Stovetop Tools
Wood & Silicone
Always stir with **wooden, plastic, or silicone** spoons. They do not get hot to the touch!
Avoid metal spoons—they conduct heat and get scorching hot!
PERFECT UTENSIL CHOICE
Oven Mitt Armor
Always wear dry oven mitts or use pot holders when holding pot handles, adjusting lids, or moving cookware.
Remember: Metal stays hot long after the stove is off!
ESSENTIAL PROTECTIVE GEAR
Wet towels conduct heat—never use a wet towel as a pot holder! Slide 6 of 8

T F
2. Pot handles should always be turned facing inward over the countertop so they don't get bumped.
T F
3. A metal spoon is the best tool to leave sitting in a simmering pot because it doesn't melt.
T F
4. Long hair must be tied back and loose shirt sleeves should be rolled up before turning on any heat.

Stovetop Superheroes
Teacher Guide
This resource provides a step-by-step facilitation guide for teaching basic stovetop heat control, pacing, and core safety procedures to elementary students and beginning home cooks.
Lesson Overview & Goals
Target Competencies:
- Identify LOW, MEDIUM, and HIGH heat ranges.
- Execute the "Handle Rule" and center pots correctly.
- Recognize heat conductiveness of cooking tools.
- Understand the critical role of constant adult supervision.
Suggested Timeline (50 Minutes):
- 00-10 Min: Live demonstration (show cold pan/spoons).
- 10-30 Min: Guided presentation (Slide Deck discussion).
- 30-45 Min: Independent/supervised Worksheet.
- 45-50 Min: Signing of the Superhero Pledge.
Slide-by-Slide Facilitation Script
Slide 2 & 3: The Superhero Code & Heat Dial
Key Concept: Emphasize that children are "Superheroes" but their adult is the "Sidekick" who must actually touch controls and supervise.
Ask: "What could happen if we put a dish towel too close to a gas burner?" (Fire risk).
Slide 4 & 5: Safe Zone & Watchfulness
Key Concept: Reiterate the "Handle Rule." Demonstrate with a physical pan (or picture) how handles can get caught on shirts. Explain how steam from lids behaves like invisible heat that can scald instantly.
Slide 6 & 7: Utensils & The Kitchen Hero Quiz
Key Concept: Let students touch a cold wooden spoon and a cold metal spoon. Explain how metal allows heat to crawl up into your hands.
Quiz Prompt: Let students vote on Option A, B, or C. Guide them to select B as the correct answer and explain why A and C are dangerously incorrect.
