Lesson Overview
The first day in the weight room sets the standard for safety, teamwork, and growth. This lesson bypasses dry rules-lecturing in favor of active, high-energy community building. Students share their summer athletic activities, establish personal strength/wellness goals, and complete an essential prior-experience and safety comfort survey.
Classroom Preparation & Materials Checklist
Iron Welcome Slides : Queued on projector (includes "Coach's Journey" slide).
Lifting Lab Discussion Cards : Cut and distributed (1 set per group of 3-4 students).
Iron Goals Interest Survey : Double-sided copy for each student.
Pencils & clipboards : Provided for active writing on the weight room floor.
Lesson Pacing & Activities
00-10 Min
Active Warm-up: "The Strength Spectrum"
Line up students across the gym floor based on their summer activity levels or sport background. Solicit quick, humorous anecdotes to warm up the room's energy.
10-25 Min
Visual Setup: Expectations, Identity, and Teacher's Story
Utilize the Welcome Slides to introduce the course mission, break down fitness myths, and highlight that everyone belongs in this weight room regardless of experience. Share your personal transition story from aimless gym-going to structured, wellness-focused lifting.
25-40 Min
Interactive: Lifting Lab Discussion Cards
Break students into small groups of 3-4 on the floor. Hand out the task cards. Groups take turns drawing cards, tackling funny summer questions, and debating gym scenarios.

Detailed Instructions
Facilitating Your Story: "Wellness & Intent"
As a fitness & wellness-based PE teacher (rather than sports-performance exclusive), use Slide 3 to set a supportive, non-intimidating stage. Tell the story of how you transitioned from aimlessly "going to the gym" to practicing real weightlifting .
Emphasize the Mindset Shift: Moving from guessing/seeking mirrors to lifting with structured progression, functional patterns, and specific wellness goals.
Build Trust: Admitting you used to feel lost or did not know what to do in the gym disarms student anxiety and builds immediate community.
Active Coaching during Icebreakers
While groups are rotating through cards, walk the room with clipboard in hand. Look for group chemistry, potential workout partner dynamics, and students who may feel intimidated by the weight room space.
Pro-Tip for Quiet Groups
If a group is quiet, jump in and answer a card first with a funny, self-deprecating story about your own early weightlifting or summer physical training mishaps. Modeling vulnerability breaks the ice instantly.
Survey Diagnostics (35-45 Min)
Distribute the Iron Goals Interest Survey . Emphasize that this is not graded and is solely for tailoring the upcoming semester’s workouts to their unique goals and needs.
Goal Segmentation
Notice which students choose **Athletic & Performance** goals (sports readiness, powerlifting) vs. **Personal Wellness** (stress relief, functional movement, active lifestyle). Use this data when designing small-group workout pods.
Safety Baseline
The safety matrix on page 2 is critical. Note students who rate themselves low (1 or 2) on safety and lift-form confidence. Place these students near your core coaching station during the first week of active lifting.
Closing & Weight Room Respect (45-50 Min)
Norm 1
Absolute Safety Over Ego
No student ever lifts alone without a competent spotter who is paying active attention. Bad form is stopped immediately by anyone who notices it.

01
Summer Feats
Summer Swoly-mpics
What is the most physically intense thing you did this summer?
(Think hiking, playing sports, hauling heavy boxes, or even just carrying all the groceries up three flights of stairs in one trip!)

02
The Target
Weightroom Superpower
If you could walk out of this weight training class in four months with one physical "superpower" or specific milestone achieved, what would it be?
(Is it benching your bodyweight, gaining massive energy, running faster, or just feeling robust and healthy?)
Weight Training Orientation • Expectations
03
Gym Realness
No Judgment Zone
What part of weight training or walking into a fitness space makes you feel the most nervous, out of place, or confused?
(Be honest! Is it not knowing how to use the machines, holding up other lifters, or worrying about your lifting form?)

Gym Vibes
The Hype Track
You get complete AUX control over the weight room sound system for exactly one heavy set.
What single song are you playing to absolute max-volume, and what physical challenge are you using that energy to crush?

Myth Busting
The "Bulk" Fallacy
Gym Myth: "If you lift weights, you will automatically get bulky, stiff, and lose your athletic speed and flexibility."
Do you think this statement is true, partially true, or completely false? Discuss as a group and justify your answers.

Trust Mechanics
The Elite Spotter
Imagine you are attempting a difficult personal-best lift. What are the specific qualities of a partner you want spotting you?
(Is it silent, razor-sharp focus? Or high-energy cheering? How does an unsupportive partner behave?)

Active Warm-up THE SPECTRUM
The Strength Spectrum
Before we touch the weights, let’s see where we stand. Line up across the gym floor based on your summer:
Left Side: Slept, relaxed, played games, minimal moving
Right Side: Non-stop sports, hiking, lifting, intense labor
Rule of the Line
Be honest! There is no wrong answer. We will interview a few people to hear their funniest active (or totally inactive) summer stories.
Warm up your muscles and warm up your voice.

About the Coach MY MISSION
Fitness & Wellness Focus
This class is not just about varsity sports performance. My mission is centered on **wellness, physical longevity, and mental health**.
We are building lifelong training habits that protect your joints, relieve stress, and make you feel proud of what your body can do.
Beyond "Going to the Gym"
For a long time, I just "went to the gym" without a real plan. I was guessing, copying others, and feeling lost.
Finding **real, structured weightlifting** changed everything. It brought intent, safety, patient goal-setting, and pure empowerment. That is what we are building here.
Every lifter starts as a beginner. Let's grow together.

Gym Standards OUR CODE
Safety Over Ego
We do not lift to show off. Correct form is better than heavy weight. We always use attentive, active spotters on every single lift.
Ultimate Support
No egos, no mocking, no cameras. We celebrate work ethic, effort, and consistency, whether you are lifting 10 lbs or 300 lbs.
This room is a sanctuary for self-improvement. Let's protect it.
