Poison Patrol Teacher Guide
K-1 Identification & Safety Lesson
Objective
Students will use art to reinforce visual recognition of poison ivy in different seasons and learn the "leaves of three" safety rule.
Timing
30 Minutes total duration.
Materials Needed
- Ivy Alert Slides
- Seasons of Danger Worksheet
- Crayons (Green, Red, Brown, Black)
- Internet & Screen (for video)
Lesson Procedure
1
Warm-up: The Color Trick (5 min)
Show Slide 2 (Green leaf vs Red leaf). Ask: "Are these from the same plant?"
Key Point: Explain that plants change colors just like we change clothes! Today we are "Nature Detectives" looking for one specific plant that hides in different colors.

Video: Identification Training (5 min)
Play video from Slide 3. Watch specifically from 1:52 to 2:48.
- At 2:11: Pause and count the 3 leaves aloud as a class.
- At 2:40: Pause on the "hairy vine" image. Ask: "Would you touch this fuzzy vine?" (No! It still has the oil).

Art Activity: Seasons of Danger (15 min)
Hand out the coloring sheets. Students color poison ivy in three stages:
Summer: Green
Fall: Red
Winter: Brown/Hairy
Reinforce: "Every group of leaves gets a number 3!"

Closure: Scrub the Oil (5 min)
Show Slide 6 (Washing Hands). Practice the motions together.
Chant: "If it's hairy, or has leaves of three... wash your hands, so you're itch-free!"
