Orbit Commander Lesson Plan Differentiated Mission Plan • Grades K–2 PE
Orbit Commander Lesson Plan
Duration: 40–45 Min
Kindergarten & Early Primary Focus
Learning Goals
Distinguish self-space (bubble) from galaxy space; progress through developmental jump, gallop, hop, and skip.
PE Standards
SHAPE America S1.E1 (Locomotor patterns), S2.E1 (Space pathways & boundaries), S4.E1 (Personal safety).
Kindergarten Props
1 hula hoop per cadet (bumper shield), 24 color-matched poly spots, 12 dome cones (asteroids), tambourine/drum.
Kindergarten Concrete Bubble Anchor: To prevent young cadets from collapsing their personal space, have them physically hold their hula hoop around their waist as a "Spaceship Bumper Ring" during initial orbits before transitioning to invisible force fields.
1 Ignition & Concrete Space Setup (Warm-Up)
8 Minutes
A. The Astronaut Suit Inflation
Cadets start inside their hoop "docking pad." Call-and-response: "Put on space boots (stomp), zip space suit (reach down to toes), blow up helmet (puff cheeks and draw wide circle in air)."
B. Call-and-Response Radar Freeze
Teacher calls: "Astronauts in space!" Cadets respond: "Bubbles safe!" Cadets march inside hoop; when drum stops, they freeze like statues for 3 seconds.
2 Flight Academy: Developmental Locomotor Bridges
12 Minutes
Kindergarteners develop locomotor patterns at varying rates. Use these developmental stepping stones:
Rocket Gallop
K CUE: Steer the Ship!
Hands hold imaginary steering wheel
Front foot leads; back foot chases
Say rhythm aloud: "Step-Together!"
Pre-K Bridge: Side-slide facing wall
Comet Hop
K CUE: 2-Foot Rocket Jump
Bridge: 2-foot jump & land softly
Progression: Balance on 1 foot 3 sec
Comet Hop: 1 foot spring, same foot land
"Bend your marshmallow knees!"
Lunar Skip
K CUE: Giant Robot March
Bridge: March lifting knees to tap hands
Progression: March, March, March-Hop!
True Skip: Step-Hop, Step-Hop
Allow fast galloping if skip is nascent

Kindergarten Mission Flow & Adaptations
Mission Part II
3 Main Game: The Orbit Traffic Flow (One-Way Galaxy)
15 Minutes
Kindergarteners naturally cluster. Establish "The Cosmic Orbit Highway" : all cadets travel counter-clockwise around the outer galaxy perimeter before venturing into inner planet spots.
Traffic Flow Protectors:
Follow the direction arrows taped on floor.
No passing too close—maintain 2 arm lengths.
Green spots = Rest pads; Yellow cones = Asteroids.
Visual & Sound Tempo Triggers:
Slow Drum: Two-foot Jump or 1-foot Comet Hop.
Quick Tambourine: Rocket Gallop with steering wheel.
Triangle Ting / Whistle: Statue Freeze in self-space!
4 Splashdown: Sensory Return to Launchpad
7 Minutes
1. Slow Orbit Walk: Cadets glide back to their original launchpad hoop.
2. Balloon Breath: Inhale puffing up their "astronaut spacesuit" (arms circle wide), exhale with a gentle "sssshhhh" as the suit deflates.
3. Visual Check: "Give a big thumbs up to your chest if your bubble stayed unpopped today!"
Developmental Tiering & Accommodations
Junior Cadets (Kindergarten)
Allow 2-foot jumps; carry hoop as physical bumper; maintain 1-way traffic flow; praise spatial awareness over speed.
Flight Commanders (Grades 1–2)
Alternate lead foot while galloping on the fly; switch feet continuously while hopping; dodge floating asteroids freely.
Sensory & Adaptive Needs
Provide visual boundary tape; allow cadets to partner with a peer holding a shared pool noodle; use visual picture cue cards.
Kindergarten Observational Mastery Rubric
Skill Category Exploring (1) Developing Cadet (2) Master Astronaut (3) Personal Bubble Frequently tags or bumps into peers; leaves designated lane. Maintains bubble when holding hoop bumper; responds to cues. Independently avoids peers and obstacles without physical prop. Locomotor Stepping Runs flat-footed; unable to gallop or jump on cue. Performs 2-foot jump, robot march, and one-side gallop. Performs smooth rocket gallop, 1-foot hop, and beginning skip. Freeze Response Continues moving after drum stops; falls over. Stops within 2 seconds; balances on two feet safely. Freezes immediately on audio signal; balances steadily on 1 foot.

K Bridge: Bumper Car Traffic Patrol
Every kindergarten cadet holds their hula hoop around their waist. If any hoop touches another, both cadets say "Beep-beep! Space check!" and take 3 steps back into empty space.
K Bridge: Color Planet Station Docking
Poly spots are color-coded (Red Mars, Blue Neptune, Yellow Sun). Teacher calls out "Fly to Blue Neptune!" Cadets gallop to blue spots without crowding (1 per spot).
Splashdown Debrief Cool Down Phase 4 • Earth Re-Entry Protocol
Splashdown Debrief Cool Down
Duration: 7 Mins
Kindergarten Sensory Descent
Mission Splashdown Guide: After high-tempo galactic travel, Cadets must decelerate their orbital thrusters, slow their respiratory cycle, and ground themselves inside their personal launchpad hoop before re-entering school orbit.
RESTORE 01
Parachute Balloon Inhales
Sit cross-legged inside hoop. Inhale slowly through nose for 4 counts while raising arms high overhead like an open re-entry parachute. Exhale softly through mouth for 4 counts with a gentle "sssshhhh" as arms gently float down to knees.
Rhythm: 4 In • Hold 2 • 4 Out (Repeat 4x)
RESTORE 02
Thruster Toe Touch
Extend both legs straight out in front inside hoop. Reach astronaut gloves forward toward space boots without bouncing. Keep chest lifted, gently stretching calves and hamstrings used during galloping and hopping.
Hold: Smooth steady stretch for 15 seconds
RESTORE 03
Cosmic Butterfly Dock
Bring bottoms of shoes together inside the hoop. Hold ankles gently and slowly flutter knees like spaceship solar wings. Gently press knees down toward the floor while keeping spine tall.
Focus: Hip opener & calm posture (15 seconds)
RESTORE 04
