Whisper Roar Lesson Plan Early Learning Guide Pre-K (Ages 3–5)
Whisper & Roar: Active Listening Expedition
Total Duration 45–55 Min
Core Focus
Auditory discrimination, dynamic volume regulation, and spatial listening cues.
Developmental Domain
Self-regulation, phonological awareness readiness, and sensory processing.
Setting
Indoor circle rug transition to outdoor courtyard / playground soundwalk.
Guiding Expedition Question
"How do our detective ears help our bodies know when to whisper like a mouse and when to roar like a lion?"
What Explorers Will Learn
Differentiate 3 Volume Tiers: Level 0 (Silent Sloth), Level 1 (Mouse Whisper), Level 2 (Turtle Talk), Level 3 (Lion Roar).
Physical Cupping Gesture: Position hands behind ears to amplify environmental frequencies.
Track Environmental Cues: Identify at least 3 distinct nature or community sounds during outdoor exploration.
Safari Gear & Prep
Print Materials: Sound Explorer Maps (1 per child), clipboards/hard boards, crayons.
Auditory Signal: Small meditation chime, rainstick, or gentle bell for auditory focus checks.
Game Props: Whisper & Roar cut-out cards and the Visual Volume Gauge posted at child height.
1 Warm-Up: The Sound Detective Awakening
10 Minutes
The Safari Hook: Ring chime once. "Close your eyes until the chime disappears completely into thin air." Instruct children to raise both index fingers when the sound is truly gone.
Body Calibration: Teach "Detective Ear Cups" —curve hands behind ears and pivot head slowly side to side. Prompt: "Who can hear the hum of the classroom clock? Who can hear our breath?"
2 Direct Exploration: The 4-Level Volume Ladder
12 Minutes
Introduce the Visual Volume Gauge using physical animal embodiment:
Level 0: Snail Pure silence; stillness
Level 1: Mouse Gentle whisper breath
Level 2: Turtle Calm table conversation
Level 3: Lion Playground roar (outside!)

Phase 3 & 4
3 Guided Practice: Outdoor Sound-Mapping Walk
15 Minutes
Equip each child with their Sound Explorer Map clipped to a board and 2 crayons. Move outside as "silent stalking foxes" (Level 0).
Stop 1 — Tree Canopy / Garden: Cue: "3-2-1 Freeze & Cup Ears." Direct focus upward. Can students identify wind in the branches or a distant bird? Have children color the Singing Bird icon.
Stop 2 — Fence / Perimeter Line: Listen for human and mechanical sounds (passing car, airplane hum, lawnmower). Discuss: "Is that sound near our toes or far away?"
Stop 3 — Mystery Discovery: Stop on the blacktop or dirt. Tap shoes, crunch mulch, or clap hands once. Prompt students to draw their favorite surprise outdoor sound in the bottom exploration frame.
4 Movement Game: Red Light Whisper, Green Light Roar
10 Minutes
Gather in an open grassy circle. Teacher holds up flashcards:
• Mouse Card (Level 1): Tiptoe in slow motion while making soft "sniff-sniff" or quiet squeaks.
• Lion Card (Level 3): Pounce safely in place and unleash an outdoor safari roar!
• Sloth Card (Level 0): Instant freeze in whatever pose they are in. Complete auditory hush.
5 Cool-Down & Debrief: Restoring Calm
5 Minutes
Transition back to rug. Guide 3 "Bumblebee Breaths" (inhale deep through nose, hum softly like a bee on exhale). Debrief question: "When is a mouse whisper super helpful inside our classroom?"
Differentiation & Sensory Accommodations
For Auditory Sensitivities: Provide noise-dampening earmuffs for children sensitive to loud outdoor noises. Allow them to be the "Volume Card Master" who signals volume shifts.
For Multilingual / Visual Learners: Pair all verbal volume directions with physical hand gestures (fingers to lips for 1, wide open arms for 3). Rely heavily on the animal cards.
Quick Observation Rubric Formative Checklist
1. Volume Modulation
Can shift voice from whisper (1) to talk (2) to roar (3) upon prompt.
2. Physical Cues
Uses cupped hands independently when asked to focus on quiet sounds.
3. Sound Mapping
Identifies & marks at least 3 outdoor sounds on the activity map.
