Instructional Blueprint & Activity Specs
Target Throwing: Pin Attack & Pin Shuffle
Focus Hyde Words: Courage & Integrity
1
Step in Opposition
Step forward with the foot OPPOSITE your throwing hand directly toward pin.
2
Lock Eyes on Target
Focus intensely on the base of the bowling pin, not the ball in your hand.
3
Snap & Follow Through
Release ball smoothly at waist/chest level and reach toward the opposite pocket.
Activity 1
Pin Attack (Target & Spot Collection)
Time: 12–15 Minutes
Setup & Rules:
- Place 20–30 poly spots across gym floor with 1 bowling pin sitting on each spot.
- Students line up behind the baseline throwing line with foam or yarn balls.
- On whistle, throwers aim to strike any standing pin.
- Hit Rule: When a pin is knocked down, thrower safely retrieves ball and claims the poly spot underneath.
- The fallen pin is stood back up directly on the gym floor for others.
- Round ends when all spots are collected!
Hyde Character in Action:
Integrity: Only take a spot if your throw caused the pin to fall. Never snatch spots if another student's ball hit first.
Courage: Step back from easy front pins to aim for deep back-court spots.
Concern: Always scan both directions before retrieving balls to prevent collisions.
Activity 2
Pin Shuffle Targets (Progressive Distance)
Time: 15–20 Minutes
Setup & Mechanics:
- Teams of 3–4 stationed in designated lanes with 4 floor markers at 20ft, 15ft, 10ft, and 5ft.
- Bowling pin starts on the farthest spot (Spot 4).
- Teammates rotate throwing foam balls at the pin from the team line.
- Shuffle Rule: When a thrower hits the pin, the retriever moves the pin ONE spot closer to the team station (Spot 3 → Spot 2 → Spot 1).
- Scoring: When hit on the last spot (Spot 1), the team earns a beanbag in their bucket, and pin resets to Spot 4!
Progress Monitoring & Form Rubric:
Level 4 (Mastery): Opposite step + fluid arm path + 70%+ pin strike
Level 3 (Proficient): Opposite step consistent; eye contact held
Level 2 (Developing): Same-foot step or rushes release
Level 1 (Novice): No step; needs yarn ball / 5ft proximity
Hyde Character Debrief: Integrity on the Floor
Gather students in the center circle. Prompt: "In Pin Attack and Pin Shuffle, nobody can watch every single roll of the ball except you. How did choosing Integrity over cheating make today's game fair and exciting for everyone?" Have 2 students share examples of a peer demonstrating Courage by adjusting their throw distance.

Character & Safety in Action
Slide 2 of 6
I

Embrace the challenge of distant targets.
Step back to test your throwing accuracy and bounce back after misses.
S
Safety & Concern
Protect your peers across the gym.
Whistle blows = Freeze immediately. Scan the floor before retrieving.

Mechanical Technique
3 Keys to Hitting the Pin
Slide 3 of 6
CUE 1 👀
Lock Eyes on Target
Aim for the base of the pin. Stare directly where you want the ball to strike, not at your hand.
Focus gives accuracy!

Step in Opposition
Step forward with the foot opposite your throwing hand. Point your toes straight at the target.
Right hand = Left foot steps!
CUE 3 🎯
Snap & Follow Through
Release smoothly toward the pin and reach your hand down across toward your opposite pocket.
Finish smooth and balanced!
Coach Check: "Eyes locked... Step opposite... Snap through!"
Activity 1
Game 1: Pin Attack!
Slide 4 of 6
