Rope Launch Teacher Guide Grade 1-3 Physical Education β’ Lesson 1
Rope Launch Teacher Guide
Unit: Rope Masters β’ Focus: Sizing, Safety Bubbles, Wrist Turns & Soft Landings
Lesson Length
30β40 Min
Indiana PE Standards: 1.1.2 & 2.1.2 (Soft 2-Foot Landings) β’ 1.1.4 (Self-Turned Rope Entry) β’ 4.1.1 (Spatial Safety & Equipment Respect)
Key Objectives
β’ Size rope handles to underarms correctly.
β’ Maintain a 6-foot "Safety Bubble" during all swings.
β’ Execute 5 consecutive two-foot "Ninja Landings".
Core Coaching Cues
1. "Ninja Feet"
Land softly on the balls of your feet with bent kneesβmake zero floor sound.
2. "Glue the Elbows"
Keep elbows tucked gently into ribs; turn only with small wrist circles.
3. "Smile, Don't Whip"
Rope creates an easy "U" smile as it touches the floor in front.
Equipment Needed
1 licorice jump rope per student (7ft, 8ft, 9ft color-coded), floor spots/cones for bubble boundaries, whistle or music player.
1 Safety Bubble & Rope Sizing Routine 7 Mins
Helicopter Check: Students fold rope in half, extend one arm, and slowly turn in a circle. If rope touches anyone or anything, their "Safety Bubble" is too close!
Sizing Check: Stand on center of rope with one foot. Pull handles straight up. Handles should reach armpits. Adjust rope knots if handles exceed shoulders.
2 Isolated Skill Stations (No Rope & Floor Ropes) 12 Mins
Drill A: Floor Line Ninja Bounces: Lay rope straight on gym floor. Students face perpendicular and practice two-foot rebound jumps forward and back over the rope. Listen for silence.
Drill B: Side-Swish Wrist Circles: Hold both handles in dominant hand on one side of the body. Turn small wrist circles, brushing the floor ("click-swish"). Switch to non-dominant hand.
3 The "Turn, Catch, Step" Progression 12 Mins
Ready Position: Rope behind heels, hands waist high, elbows close.
Turn & Catch: Turn rope over head; let it hit toes, catch under toes. Freeze!
Turn & Step-Over: Turn rope, catch, step one foot then second foot over.
Turn & Jump: Turn rope, wait for sound of click, jump over with two feet together!
4 Heart Rate Check & Debrief 5 Mins
Have students place hand over chest. Ask: "Why is our heart beating faster when we jump?" Practice proper figure-8 rope wrap for neat storage.
Adaptations & Support: For students struggling with timing, let them jump over a stationary floor rope or turn a weighted hoop. For advanced learners, challenge them to 3 consecutive jumps without pausing between clicks.
Common Error Correction: Windmill Arms: Remind students to keep elbows resting gently by pocket level. Large arm swings slow down the rope and cause rope tangles.

Gym Safety First
Activate Your Safety Bubble!
Before your rope ever spins, protect yourself and your classmates with three golden safety rules.
1
Helicopter Spin
Fold rope in half. Hold one handle and rotate slowly. Rope should touch nothing!
2
Floor Rope Rest
When teacher talks, rope drops around your neck like a scarf or rests at your feet.
3
Eyes Ahead
Keep your chin up and eyes looking forward, not straight down at your toes.

How to Measure Your Jump Rope
Step 1
Step on Center
Place one foot firmly right on the middle of the rope on the gym floor.
Keep your foot flat like an anchor!
Step 2
Pull Handles Up
Pull both handles straight up alongside your ribs toward your chest.
Keep equal rope length on both sides!
The Sweet Spot
Armpit Level!
Handle tips should hit your armpits! If at ears = too long. If at belly = too short.
Ready to jump when it hits your pits!

Soft Ninja Feet
β Balls of Feet: Jump and land on the front of your feet, not flat heels.
β Shock Absorbers: Bend knees like springy coils to absorb every bounce.
β Silent Floor: Can you jump 5 times without making any thud?
π
Wrist Engine
β Glued Elbows: Keep elbows resting snugly near your pockets.
β Wrist Circles: Draw small soup bowls in the air with your thumbs forward.
β No Windmills: Big stiff arms make the rope slow and wild!

Rhythm Rockers Teacher Guide
Unit: Rope Masters β’ Focus: Auditory Rhythm, Click-Jump Timing & Consecutive Rebounds
Lesson Length
30β40 Min
Indiana PE Standards: 1.1.4 (Continuously jump a self-turned rope) β’ 2.1.2 & 2.1.3 (Jump consecutively forward/backward) β’ 3.1.1 (Cardio fitness)
Learning Targets
β’ Identify the "click" of the rope hitting the floor.
β’ Coordinate jumping immediately upon hearing the click.
β’ Achieve 3β5 consecutive jumps without halting rope momentum.
Vocal Rhythm Cues
1. "Click... Jump!"
Teach students to jump only when they hear the rope hit the floor, not before.
2. "Up, Down, Bounce"
A gentle rebound bounce on the balls of feet maintains forward rhythm.
3. "Tuck & Tick"
Like a clock pendulum, wrists tick in a steady circular cadence.
Music Tempo Note
Use upbeat background music at 110β120 BPM . This natural tempo matches elementary jumping cadence without rushing.
1 Rhythm Clapping & Rebound Echo Warmup 6 Mins
Teacher sets a steady drum beat / clap: "Click... Hop! Click... Hop!" Students mimic with two-foot soft hops in place without ropes. Emphasize light spring in ankles.
2 Bridge Drill: "Turn-Step" to "Turn-Jump" 10 Mins
Stage A (The Catch & Hop): Turn rope, let it land on floor under toes, then do a forward jump over the rope. Reset and repeat 5 times.
Stage B (The Fly-Through): Turn rope, do NOT let it stop! As rope brushes the floor, jump over while the rope continues its fluid circle.
3 The "Consecutive 5" Progression Stations 14 Mins
Pairs work together. Jumper focuses on counting consecutive clean rotations. Partner counts aloud: "1... 2... 3... Great spring!"
Level 1 (Grades 1β2): Single bounce with pause, working toward 3 continuous jumps.
Level 2 (Grades 2β3): 5 to 10 continuous single-bounce jumps with soft ninja knees.
4 Heart Rate Comparison & Calf Stretch 5 Mins
Wall calf stretches (pushing against gym wall with back heel flat). Discuss: "Notice how smooth turning feels easier on your legs than choppy stopping and starting!"
Jumping Too Early (Premature Jump): Most common error in Grade 1: students jump when rope is still directly over their head. Cue: "Wait for the slap!" Have them say "Hear it, then clear it!"
Double Bouncing vs Single Bouncing: Many beginners perform a small rebound bounce between rope turns. In Grade 1-2, this is developmentally appropriate! Celebrate rhythm over speed.

Sound of the Rope
"Hear It, Then Clear It!"
Your ears are your secret weapon! Don't jump too earlyβwait for the floor click.
β
The Early Jump Trap
If you jump while the rope is still in the air over your head, your feet land too soon and the rope catches your toes!
β
The Rhythm Secret
Keep your feet on the ground until you hear the gentle CLICK on the gym floor, then bounce right over!

Elbows tucked close to ribs; smooth, circular wrist action drives rope. Rhythmic Continuity (IN 2.1.4 & 3.1.2) Single turn-and-stop only; cannot sustain forward movement. Completes 2β4 consecutive jumps with consistent tempo (single or double bounce). Sustains 5+ consecutive jumps fluently; adapts to bell/skier variations. Safety & Sportsmanship (IN 4.1.1) Swings rope into others' personal space; drops rope carelessly. Maintains bubble when reminded; stores rope when asked. Always checks 6-ft safety bubble; cheers for peers; wraps rope properly.
Grade 1 Target
1β3 consecutive clean jumps with self-turned rope; soft ninja landings.
Grade 2 Target
4β7 consecutive clean jumps; performs bell and skier jumps over floor line.
