Setup & Non-Reader Token Systems
1. Behavior Incentive Integration for Young Athletes
Visual Token Card
Use a 3-token velcro board (e.g., 3 football stickers). When the student completes a work chunk or shows expected behavior, they earn a football. 3 footballs = Touchdown Break!
Visual Sand Timer
Avoid digital clocks. Use a heavy-duty, colored 3-minute sand timer or liquid motion bubbler. Teach the student: "Flip it when you start. When the sand rests at the bottom, your play is over."
High-Energy Reframe
Celebrate their athleticism! Frame the station as positive conditioning for a team superstar, reinforcing that strong athletes have great body control and self-discipline.
2. Classroom Spatial Blueprint (The 3×3 Ft Endzone Square)
Physical Boundaries
- • Turf Square: Tape down a 3×3 ft square with green painter’s tape or use a small green bath rug. For 6-year-olds, a tactile rug keeps feet grounded inside the zone.
- • Eye-Level Card: Hang the laminated station card at a 6-year-old’s eye height (~36–40 inches) on a wall or low bookshelf.
Visual Privacy & Sound
- • Low Distraction Corner: Position behind a teacher desk, low bookshelf, or easel so peers working at tables don’t have direct sightlines.
- • Wall Support: Ensure one side of the square touches a smooth wall or firm bookcase backing for Step 3 (Wall Chair).
3. "Ninja Cleats" Soundproof Coaching for Non-Readers
At age 6, telling a child "be quiet" is often too abstract. Use these three concrete sensory metaphors to teach silent movement:
🦶 Cloud Tiptoes
Model: "Pretend the floor is made of sleeping puppies! Can you tap your tiptoes so quietly that not one puppy wakes up?"
🤫 Secret Agent Lips
A finger over the lips gesture. When in the Endzone, mouths are silent like stealth football ninjas scoring a surprise touchdown.
👌 Silent Thumbs-Up
Instead of speaking to you when finished, the student simply gives you a quiet thumbs-up from the station before returning to their seat.

4. Teaching a Non-Reader to Follow the Picture Card
Step 1: Picture Matching
Physical Modeling (1-on-1 during free choice): Point to Step 1 on the card: "Look at this picture! What is his knee doing? That's right, freeze like a bronze statue! Now point to Step 2—see his fast ninja toes? Copy me!" Practice each of the 5 pictures twice together.
Step 2: Silent Pointing
Independent Drill with Teacher Standing By: Student goes to the mat. Do not give verbal instructions. Only point your finger at picture 1, then picture 2. Let the student check off the numbers with the dry-erase marker. Praise silently with a double thumbs-up.
Step 3: 100% Solo Play
Full Independence: Student earns their 3rd football token, walks to the Endzone unprompted, flips timer, follows pictures 1 through 5, wipes card, gets a water sip, and returns to desk to start working.
5. Quick Movement Swaps (Heavy Work vs. Calming)
Need Heavy Muscle Work? (Very Fidgety)
If the student is crashing, pushing chairs, or hyperactive:
- • Lineman Wall Push: Put palms flat on the wall and push as hard as possible without making a sound for 10 seconds.
- • Bear Paw Freeze: Hands and feet on mat, hold body steady like a defending linebacker.
Need Calming Down? (Over-Excited)
If breathing is fast or student is getting silly:
- • Field Goal Candle Blow: Arms up high (\O/), slowly blow out imaginary candles on fingertips as arms float down.
- • Helmet Hug: Wrap both arms around shoulders tightly, give a big squeeze for 5 seconds, and release.
6. Troubleshooting Common 6-Year-Old Scenarios
Laughing / Silliness
Walk over quietly. Point to the "SHHH!" ninja icon on the card. Whisper: "Pro athletes practice serious focus. Show me your serious game face."
Classmates Watching
Prep peers at morning circle: "Athlete X is doing sports training in the Endzone to help their brain. Good teammates look at their own paper."
Won't Return to Desk
Tap the visual routine at bottom (Water bottle ➜ Chair). Hand them their pencil: "You scored the touchdown! Now it's time to run the classroom play."
