Duel Master Teacher Guide One on One Fun
Lesson 1: 1v1 Duels Teacher Guide
Learning Goals
• Students will protect the ball using their body (shielding).
• Students will use small touches to dribble around an opponent.
• Students will demonstrate defensive posture (knees bent, watching the ball).
Equipment Needed
One soccer ball per student (or 1 per 2 students)
Cones to mark 10x10 yard mini-pitches
Small "pop-up" goals or cone gates
Instructional Steps
1. Warm Up: Red Light, Green Light (5 mins)
Active
Students dribble their balls in a large area. "Green" = fast dribble, "Yellow" = slow/tiny touches, "Red" = stop with foot on ball. Focus on keeping the ball close!
2. Mini-Lesson: Protecting Your Treasure (5 mins)
Concept
"Imagine the ball is a piece of gold. If someone tries to take it, you put your body in between them and the treasure!"
Demo: Stand with ball, have a student try to touch it while you turn your back to them.
Key Cues: "Shield it," "Look for the gap," "Toe-flick to space."
3. The 1v1 Duel Challenge (15 mins)
The Game
Set up 10x10 yard squares with a small goal on each end. Pair students up. On the whistle, they play 1v1 for 1 minute.
Teacher Tip:
Rotate partners every 2 rounds. Encourage the "Defensive Stance"—knees bent like a crab!
Simplification:
If students struggle, play "Body Tag" where they dribble and try to tag the opponent's knee without losing their ball.
Huddle Up: Discussion Questions
"What did you do with your body to keep the ball away from your opponent?"
"Was it easier to score when you kicked the ball hard or kept it close?"

Lesson 2: Teammate Tactics Guide
Lesson Objective
Students will understand the value of a teammate. They will practice identifying when a teammate is "open" and making the decision to pass instead of dribbling through multiple defenders.
Key Vocabulary
TEAMMATE PASS OPEN SPACE SUPPORT
Field Activities
1 Warm Up: The Passing Train (8 mins)
Partners stand 5 yards apart. One student dribbles in a circle around their partner, then passes the ball. The partner receives and repeats.
Goal: Soft "cushion" trap and accurate push passes.
2 Concept: 2 vs. 1 Fun (7 mins)
Set up a 2v1 scenario (two attackers vs one defender). This makes it obvious that passing to the open teammate is the best way to score.
"Ask: If the defender is blocking you, who is free to help? Your teammate!"
2v2 Mini-Games (15 mins)
Set up 15x15 yard pitches. Play 3-minute games. Every goal counts as 2 if it comes from a pass!
Coaching Cue:
"Find your friend!" Encourage students to look up while dribbling.
Freeze Moment:
Pause play if a student is stuck. Ask: "Where is your teammate standing?"
Reflective Huddle
"Why is it harder for the other team to stop us when we have two people?"
Listen for answers like: "Because they can't be in two places at once" or "Because we can pass around them."

Lesson 3: Continuous Play Guide
Concept: Continuous Play
The goal is to eliminate downtime. When a ball goes out, a new one is immediately introduced. This keeps students' hearts pumping and forces them to react instantly to changes on the field.

High Intensity
The Action Plan
1. Warm Up: Ball Hunt (5 mins)
Scatter 20+ balls in the area. On "GO", students must find a ball, dribble it to a cone "nest", and then run back to find another one. High speed!
Core Rule
2. The "New Ball" Scrimmage (20 mins)
Play 3v3 or 4v4. The teacher stands on the sideline with a mesh bag of balls. As soon as a ball goes out of bounds, the teacher yells "NEW BALL!" and rolls a fresh one into a different area.
Do not wait for students to retrieve out-of-bounds balls.
Encourage immediate "Offense to Defense" transition.
3. Level Up: Multi-Ball Madness (Last 5 mins)
Introduce 2 or 3 balls into the same game simultaneously. This forces students to scan the field and make quick decisions about which "threat" to defend or which "opportunity" to attack.
Transition Questions
"How did it feel when the teacher yelled 'New Ball'?"
Look for: "Excited," "Fast," "I had to look around."
"What do you do when you lose the ball?"
Look for: "Chase it," "Turn around," "Defend!"

Lesson 4: Spatial Awareness & Zones
The "Beehive" Problem
Kindergarteners naturally cluster around the ball. This "bunching" makes it impossible to pass and creates chaos.
The Zone Solution
By assigning "Zones" (Home Base), students learn to trust their teammates to do their job in other parts of the field.
The Zone Strategy
1 Warm Up: The Island Game (10 mins)
Mark 4 large squares (Islands) with cones. Divide the class. Students must dribble ONLY inside their island. On "STORM", they must find a new island without bumping into anyone.
Goal: Awareness of boundaries and other players.
3v3 Zone Scrimmage (20 mins)
Divide the field into three horizontal zones (Defensive, Midfield, Attacking). Assign one player from each team to a specific zone. They cannot leave their zone!
Defense Zone:
Protect the goal. Wait for the ball to come to you.
Attack Zone:
Stay near the other team's goal. Call for passes!
Coaching Cues for Bunching
"Don't be a magnet! Find your own space."
"Go back to your home base! Wait for the ball to visit you."

Lesson 5: The Big Game Guide
The Golden Rule
"Today is about celebrating what we learned. Focus on FUN and FAIR PLAY. The score matters less than the high-fives!"
Tournament Setup
Field Layout
• 3 or 4 mini-pitches (15x20 yards)
• Small goals or cone gates
• Team colors (bibs/pennies) for 6-8 teams
The Schedule
• 5 min: Team Huddle & Name Picking
• Round 1: 8 mins
• Round 2: 8 mins
• Ceremony: 5 mins
Managing the Chaos
Let Them Play!
Minimize coaching interruptions. Only whistle for safety or ball out-of-bounds. Let students solve problems on their own.
Sportsmanship Spotlight
When you see a pass or a "Good Job" call, blow a whistle and give a loud "Fair Play Point!"
The Closing Ceremony
"Bring everyone together in a big circle. Hand out certificates and have each team do their secret cheer!"
• Recognition for Most Improved
• Recognition for Best Passing
• Recognition for Loudest Cheering
• Recognition for Best Defenders
