Rainforest Rangers Lesson Plan Lesson 1: Locomotor Basics
Rainforest Rangers
Target: Pre-K to 1st Grade | Time: 40β50 Minutes
WALK β’ RUN β’ LEAP
Theme: Jungle Adventure
Equipment Needed
Cone boundaries, poly spots ("stones"), blue jump ropes ("rivers"), upbeat instrumental jungle background tracks.
Space Setup
Define a 40x40 gym perimeter. Lay down blue rope "rivers" and colored poly spots in the center. Mark "safe trees" on the walls.
Core Objectives
Differentiate walking tempo vs. running speed. Demonstrate a single-foot takeoff and opposite-foot landing (leaping).
Adventure Script
"Rangers, put on your explorer hats! Today, we are entering the deepest, wildest rainforest in South America. To survive here, we must move like the animals. Shh... look! A silent panther is creeping through the vines. We must step so softly that not even a leaf rustles! Oh no, did you hear that? A speedy jaguar is coming! Run, run, run to the clearing! Jump over the river of blue waterβstretch your front leg out and fly!"
Movement Cues
πΎ Panther Walk Heel-to-toe, soft knees, looking ahead for danger. Silent steps.
β‘ Cheetah Run High knees, pump bent arms, light on balls of feet. Eyes up!
π Jaguar Leap Push off one foot, fly forward, land on the other foot like a cloud.
1 Warm-Up: Wake up the Jungle
8-10 Min
Vines & Branches: Students stand in self-space. Reach up tall to stretch like rainforest vines, then twist like monkey branches.
Canopy Canopy Ground: "Ranger Says" style activity. Touch head (Canopy), waist (Understory), toes (Forest Floor). Start slowly, speed up to raise heart rate.
2 Main Adventure: Canopy Crossing
25-30 Min
1. Animal Explorations (10 Min): Call out animals. Panther: Walk slowly, freezing on the "Stop" signal. Cheetah: Fast, controlled running in open spaces. Jaguar: Leap across gym floor.
2. Cross the Snake River (15 Min): Layout blue rope "rivers" around the room. Students must walk around, but when they reach a river, they must leap over it safely. Place poly spots as stepping stones for those who need a shorter step.
3 Cool-Down: Sleeping Sloths
5-7 Min
Sloth Slowdown: Walk in slow-motion, slowing breathing down. Lay on the floor in self-space as "Sleeping Sloths."
Reflection: "How does a panther's feet sound? (Quiet!) How does a jaguar leap? (One foot to another!)."
Safety & Management
"High-five" space check: Ensure children can spin around with arms out without touching anyone. Teach "Freeze" signal immediately.
Inclusivity Tricks
Simplify: Allow walking across blue ropes if leaping is too tough. Challenge: Increase river width (spread ropes further apart).

Core Objectives
Master the mechanical difference: 2 feet takeoff & landing (jumping) vs. 1 foot takeoff & landing (hopping).
Adventure Script
"Splash! Welcome to the Peaceful Pond, friends! Look at all these floating green lilypads. To cross the deep water without falling in, we must jump like frogsβbending our knees, swinging our arms, and landing on two feet! Boing! Now, try hopping on just one foot like a grasshopper. It takes lots of balance! Let's help our frog friends catch some flies by leaping across the lilypads!"
Movement Cues
πΈ Frog Jump (2 Feet) Swing arms forward, bend knees deeply, land on "motorcycle" landing (soft knees).
π¦ Grasshopper Hop (1 Foot) Take off on one foot, land on that same foot. Keep arms out like balance wings.
π¦ Turtle Rock Rest position. Tuck into a shell on your hands and knees to rest active muscles.
1 Warm-Up: Lilypad Stretch
8-10 Min
Pond Ripples: Stand on a spot. Slowly spin around with arms stretched out wide, creating "ripples" in the pond.

2. Catch the Fly Relay (15 Min): Scatter yellow "flies" at the pond edge. Students start on lilypads. They must "Frog Jump" or "Grasshopper Hop" from pad to pad to fetch a fly, then carry it back to their team's empty "reed bucket."
3 Cool-Down: Floating Dragonflies
5-7 Min
Dragonfly Float: Slow walking while flapping arms slowly like dragonfly wings. Deep breath in on wing raise, breathe out on wing lower.
Review Question: "Touch your knees if you used TWO feet to land a jump! Touch your nose if hopping on ONE foot felt like balancing on a tightrope!"
