Boundary Builders Lesson Plan Unit: Gym Navigators (Lesson 1 of 5)
Boundary Builders
Theme: The Gym is a Safe Island • Focus: Boundaries & Whistle Stops
Pre-K - 1st Grade 45 Minutes
Focus Concepts
Boundary Lines, Whistle Stops, Level 1 Speed
Equipment Needed
Whistle, 20 Cones, Poly Spots
Key Safety Rule
"Freeze instantly on Whistle. No steps!"
WARM-UP
Islands & Sharks (10 Min)
Scatter poly spots ("Islands"). Students walk at slow speed. When coach calls "Shark Attack!", students find a spot and stand on it.
Start at Level 1 speed (slow walking) only.
No pushing—multiple feet can share an island.
DIRECT DRILL
The Magic Border Patrol (12 Min)
Walk outer boundaries (floor lines) together. Teach that boundaries are "lava walls"—we never cross them.
Practice Drills:
Toe Tap Drill: Run to a boundary, tap with toe, run back.
Freeze & Melt Drill: Walk. On WHISTLE, freeze like ice. Double-whistle, "melt" down.
ACTIVE GAME
Boundary Builders (15 Min)
Students scatter. When Coach yells "Build!", students walk along boundary lines. On WHISTLE, freeze on the line.
Progression: Chasers (Coach/helpers) walk slowly to touch frozen statues. Melt and count to 5 if tagged.
Maintain low speeds (walking only) to prevent falling.
COOL DOWN
The Great Melt & Reflection (8 Min)
Slow march back to the center "Home Base" circle. Deep belly breathing.
Debrief Questions:
"What do your feet do when you hear the whistle?" • "Where is the safety boundary line?"
Coaching Cues
Cue 1
"GLUE FEET"
Stop instantly when whistle sounds. No sliding or extra steps.
Cue 2
"EYES UP"
When frozen, turn head toward the teacher immediately.
Cue 3
"SAFE ISLAND"
Keep inside boundary walls. Never exit safety zone.
Tactical Layout

Bubble Protectors Lesson Plan Unit: Gym Navigators (Lesson 2 of 5)
Bubble Protectors
Theme: Protect the Invisible Space Shield • Focus: Personal vs General Space
Pre-K - 1st Grade 45 Minutes
Focus Concepts
Self Space, General Space, Collision Avoidance
Equipment Needed
Whistle, Hula Hoops (1 per child), Foam Balls
Key Safety Rule
"Never let your invisible bubble touch another's!"
WARM-UP
Hoop Bubbles (10 Min)
Every student stands inside a hula hoop on the floor. The hoop represents their physical "Space Bubble." Students hold the hoop up around their waist.
Walk around the gym while carrying the hoop at waist level.
If two hoops touch: "Pop!" Both players must freeze, set their hoop down, do 3 jumping jacks, and continue.
DIRECT DRILL
The Invisible Forcefield (12 Min)
Put hoops away. Explain that we still have our "Invisible Bubble" surrounding us. Have students stretch arms out wide to trace their bubble.
Practice Drills:
Airplane Scan: Move like airplanes with wings (arms out). Turn and dive to avoid hitting other wings.
Bumper Warning: Walk. When coach says "Bumper!", players must freeze and pivot 180 degrees to face an open space.
ACTIVE GAME
Bubble Protectors (15 Min)
Designate 2-3 "Bubble Poppers" (wearing red jerseys or carrying a foam pool noodle). All other players are "Bubbles." Poppers walk and tap players to "pop" their space bubble.
How to Save: Popped players freeze with hands on hips (creating a hoop shape). Another player can save them by crawling carefully under their arm.
No popping above the shoulder. Emphasize safe general space navigation.
COOL DOWN
The Bubble Deflate (8 Min)
Students find a poly spot ("Home Base"). Slowly lie down. Pretend to slowly "deflate" into a flat bubble pancake on the floor.
Debrief Questions:
"How can you tell if someone is getting too close to your bubble?" • "How do your eyes help protect your space bubble?"
Coaching Cues
Cue 1
"ARMS OUT / CHECK"
Stretch arms occasionally to measure your bubble safety zone.
Cue 2
"STEER THE WHEEL"
Look left and right continuously, steer like a car to find open space.
Cue 3
"SOFT BRAKES"
Bend knees and lower your hips to stop quickly when approaching others.
Tactical Layout
Pathway Pilots Lesson Plan Unit: Gym Navigators (Lesson 3 of 5)
Pathway Pilots
Theme: Piloting Spacecraft on Cosmic Tracks • Focus: Pathways & Speeds
Pre-K - 1st Grade 45 Minutes
Focus Concepts
Straight, Curved, Zig-Zag, Speed Control (L1 & L2)
Equipment Needed
Whistle, 6 Large Cones, Pathway Visual Cards
Key Safety Rule
"Zig-zag to move around friends—never push past!"
WARM-UP
Cosmic Pathway Warm-Up (10 Min)
Students scatter. The coach holds up a large pathway illustration card (Straight, Curved, or Zig-Zag). Students must travel across the gym floor matching that style of line.
Straight: Move direct, marching like robots.
Curved: Float in large circles like birds on the wind.
Zig-Zag: Move with sharp, sudden side-to-side cuts like lightning.
DIRECT DRILL
The Speed Gear Shift (12 Min)
Teach students about their "Speed Engine Gears." Explain that the gym has speed limits depending on the activity to keep bubbles popped and bones safe.
Practice Drills:
Gear 1: Turtle Slow Walk. Perfect control, easy stops.
Gear 2: Space Jog. Knees up slightly, quick feet, but always with head up.
Emergency Brake: Jog at Gear 2. On double-whistle, drop hips and slide feet flat to stop on a dime. No tip-overs.
ACTIVE GAME
Cosmic Pathway Tag (15 Min)
Assign 2 Taggers as "Straight Meteors" (can only move in straight lines at Gear 1). Runners are "Zig-Zag Comets" (can use curves and zig-zags to evade) at Gear 2.
If a comet gets tagged, they freeze, and must map out a "zig-zag pattern" in the air with their hands 5 times to unfreeze.
Runners discover how simple zig-zag cuts make escaping slow taggers effortless!
COOL DOWN
Orbiting the Star (8 Min)
Form a giant circle on the floor line. Slowly orbit (walk curved path) around the circle, gradually slowing down to static standing belly breaths.
Debrief Questions:
"Which pathway is the hardest to follow if you're chasing someone?" • "What does our 'Emergency Brake' look like?"
Coaching Cues
Cue 1
"ZIG-ZAG CUT"
Push off your outside foot to make sudden, sharp turns.
Cue 2
"GEAR 2 FOCUS"
Stay in control. No running blindly. Never drop your chin.
Cue 3
"BRAKES DOWN"
Drop your rear end to stop. Bend knees so you don't fall forward.
Gentle Taggers Lesson Plan Unit: Gym Navigators (Lesson 4 of 5)
Gentle Taggers
Theme: Butterfly Wings & Soft Feathers • Focus: Safe Tagging & Freezing
Pre-K - 1st Grade 45 Minutes
Focus Concepts
Two-Finger Butterfly Tap, Instant Freeze & Melt, Safety Zone
Equipment Needed
Whistle, Soft Yarn Balls or Pool Noodle Rings (Tag Helpers)
Key Safety Rule
"Gentle taps on shoulders only. No pushing or shoving!"
WARM-UP
Butterfly Landings (10 Min)
Students wander the gym at Gear 1 (walking). On coach's cue "Land!", students walk to a nearby wall, line, or cone, and tap it gently with exactly two fingers.
Practice light, feather-soft touch on walls and floor spots.
Focus on keeping arms soft—never locking elbows.
DIRECT DRILL
The Butterfly Tap Rule (12 Min)
Gather students. Contrast a "Bear Push" (dangerous, push, lock elbows) with a "Butterfly Tap" (2 fingers, light, soft bend in elbow, targeting shoulders/upper back).
Partner Practice Drills:
Gentle Partner Tap: Face partner. Take turns gently tapping partner's shoulder, saying "Butterfly tap!". Partner responds by saying "Thank you!".
Freeze & Melt Drill: Walk. When partner taps, immediately freeze, bend knees, and melt to one knee. Raise hand high like a flag.
ACTIVE GAME
Butterfly Garden Tag (15 Min)
Designate 3 taggers as "Gentle Butterflies" (carrying a soft yarn ball). Butterflies move at Gear 2 (jogging) and tag classmates with the ball.
Freeze & Melt: Tapped players melt to one knee and wave their fingers like butterfly wings.
How to Free: Free players can walk to a frozen student, do a gentle double-finger tap on their shoulder, and say "Fly away!" to release them.
COOL DOWN
The Feather Drop (8 Min)
Slow march to center "Home Base". Imagine holding a tiny, delicate feather. Blow it gently into the air, watching it slowly drift down.
Debrief Questions:
"How many fingers do we use for a safe tag?" • "Where is it safe to tag a friend? (Shoulders!)"
Coaching Cues
Cue 1
"TWO FINGERS ONLY"
Touch lightly like a pointer—never slap with a flat palm.
Cue 2
"SHOULDER TAPS"
Only tag the shoulder or upper back. No heads, faces, or legs.
Cue 3
"MELT DOWN FAST"
When tagged, immediately kneel. Avoid arguing or saying 'No you didn't!'
Tag Masters Lesson Plan Unit: Gym Navigators (Lesson 5 of 5)
Tag Masters
Theme: Gym Navigator Graduation Day • Focus: Skill Consolidation & Safety Mastery
Pre-K - 1st Grade 45 Minutes
Focus Concepts
All-Concept Consolidation, Gym Etiquette, Fair Play
Equipment Needed
Whistle, Cones, Poly Spots, Navigator Certificates
Key Safety Rule
"Master navigators follow all safety rules automatically!"
WARM-UP
The Great Skill Recall (10 Min)
Students wander the gym. The coach rapidly calls out skills from Lessons 1-4. Students must immediately execute each action with no hesitation:
"Boundary Check!" Run and sit on the closest boundary line.
"Bubble Check!" Freeze with arms wide, scanning for collisions.
"Zig-Zag Gear 2!" Space jog in a zig-zag pathway.
DIRECT DRILL
The Tag Master License Test (12 Min)
Gather at center "Home Base." Explain that to earn their graduation certificate, they must show they can follow the 4 Golden Rules during gameplay.
The 4 Golden Safety Expectations:
Stay Inside: Keep feet inside the boundary line at all times.
Keep Bubble Air: No physical collisions, bumps, or tripping.
Butterfly Only: Exactly two fingers gently on shoulders.
Instant Freeze: Freeze and melt immediately if tagged.
ACTIVE GAME
Gym Navigator Championship (15 Min)
A standard tag game where all rules are active. 3-4 players are "Chasers" (wearing green bibs). All other students are "Navigators" at Gear 2.
Safety Corner: If someone runs too fast (Gear 3), collides, or tags too hard, they must go to the "Refuel Station" cone, complete 5 toe-taps on the line, and rejoin.
Tagging: Butterflies tag shoulders. Tagged players melt, and get saved by a "high-five" from a free teammate.
COOL DOWN
Graduation & Badge Award (8 Min)
Gather students in a grand circle. Announce that everyone passed their license test! Distribute physical "Gym Navigator Certificate" badges.
Reflection Focus:
"How does following the rules make tag games more fun for everyone?" • "Which rule are you most proud of mastering?"
Coaching Cues
Cue 1
"SAFETY FIRST"
Always prioritize control and classmate safety over winning.
Cue 2
"REFUEL & REJOIN"
If you make a mistake, don't worry! Go refuel, reset, and return.
