Vowel Ventures Teacher Guide Vowel Ventures
Teacher Pacing Guide • Days 1-5
MODULE 01
Weekly Goal
Identify and produce the five short vowel sounds in English, specifically distinguishing them from the consistent single sounds of Spanish vowels (a, e, i, o, u).
ESL Focus: Spanish Interference
Short /i/ (pig): Spanish speakers often hear this as Spanish /e/ or English long /e/. Focus on the "relaxed" jaw.
Short /a/ (cat): English short /a/ is much wider/flatter than Spanish /a/.
Short /u/ (cup): Often confused with Spanish /o/ or /a/.

Worksheet 01
DAY 01
/a/ and /i/
Compare English /i/ with Spanish /i/ (see vs. sit). Focus on mouth shapes.
Activity: Mouth-Mirror Match. Students look in mirrors to see the wide jaw of /a/ and the relaxed mouth of /i/.
DAY 02
/o/ and /u/
The "Open O" (hot) and "Tummy U" (cup). Notice how English /o/ is much more open than Spanish /o/.
Activity: Sound Sort. Sorting cards into /o/ and /u/ buckets based on the middle sound.
DAY 03
The Tricky /e/
Focus on /e/ (bed). Often confused with /a/ or /i/. Practice the "Edge of the bed" sound.
Activity: Vowel Hand Signals. Assign a physical movement to each of the 5 vowel sounds.
DAY 04
Vowel Comparison
Use minimal pairs: BAT, BIT, BET, BOT, BUT. Show how changing one sound changes the word.
Activity: Middle Sound Swap. Change the middle letter of a 3-letter word and read the new sound.
DAY 05
Weekly Review
Review all sounds and complete the Vowel Valley worksheet. Individual sound checks.
Activity: Vowel Valley Worksheet and individual sound-production exit ticket.

MODULE 02
Weekly Goal
Master "continuous blending" for CVC words. Transition from segmenting isolated sounds to fluidly connecting them without pauses.
ESL Focus: Blending Logic
Spanish reading is syllable-based (ma, me). English requires blending phonemes (m-a-t). Use "slide" techniques to bridge the gap between letters.
Materials
Sound Boxes
Worksheet 02
Play-Doh
DAY 06
The Blending Slide
Introduce "stretching" sounds. Use a hand-slide motion to connect /c/ to /a/ to /t/.
Activity: S-l-i-d-e. Use a toy car or finger to "drive" across three dots while reading.
DAY 07
Initial Consonants
Changing only the first letter: BAT, CAT, HAT, MAT. Build word family chains.
Activity: Tile Swap. Using letter tiles to quickly change the "head" of a word and read.
DAY 08
Ending Consonants
Changing final sounds: CAP, CAN, CAT. Emphasize crisp final sounds (essential for English).
Activity: Mystery Endings. Cover the last letter, predict, then reveal and blend.
DAY 09
Mixed CVC Speed
Randomized word lists. Focus on moving from slow blending to "whole word" automaticity.
Activity: CVC Bingo. Students identify words on a grid as the teacher calls them out.
DAY 10
Week 2 Review
Review blending skills and complete the Word Builder worksheet. Individual check-ins.
Activity: Word Builder Worksheet. Building and writing 5 target CVC words.

Teacher Pacing Guide • Days 11-15
MODULE 03
Weekly Goal
Recognize and produce rhyming words based on the rime (vowel + final consonant). Strengthen identifying word families.
ESL Focus: Rhyme Structure
In English, a rhyme requires the vowel AND ending consonant to match. Focus heavily on final sounds, as Spanish rhyming can often be vowel-only.
Materials
Matching Cards
Worksheet 03
Simple Poems
DAY 11
Identifying the Rime
Introduce "Word Families". Color-code endings to show why they rhyme (C-at , M-at ).
Activity: Thumbs Up/Down. Say two words; students indicate if they rhyme.
DAY 12
Listening Hunt
Read a poem; students clap on rhymes. Strengthen auditory discrimination.
Activity: Rhyme Partners. Give each student a card; find the classmate with the rhyming pair.
DAY 13
Rhyme Generation
Move from recognition to production. "I say Cat, you say..." Include nonsense words.
Activity: Rhyme Ball. Toss a soft ball; catcher says a rhyming word to the prompt.
DAY 14
Odd One Out
Distinguish similar endings (Fan, Fat, Far). Crucial for attending to the final consonant.
Activity: Rhyme Trashcan. Present 4 words; students "discard" the non-rhyme.
DAY 15
Review & Match
Consolidate skills. Complete Rhyme Match worksheet. Review common families.
Activity: Worksheet 03 and Family Tree drawing.

Teacher Pacing Guide • Days 16-20
MODULE 04
Weekly Goal
Learn to divide and read two-syllable words using the VC/CV pattern (Rabbit words). Recognize that every syllable must have a vowel sound.
ESL Focus: Syllable Stress
Spanish syllables are usually even in length. English syllables often have a "stressed" and "unstressed" (schwa) sound. Introduce the "Robot Voice" to identify parts, then "Natural Voice" to read the word.
Materials
Syllable Slasher Worksheet
"Clap it Out" cards
Scissors for "word cutting"
DAY 16
The Chin Drop
Introduce syllables as "beats". Use the chin-drop method (put hand under chin; how many times does it drop?).
Activity: Name Claps. Clap out the syllables of every student's name in the class.
DAY 17
VC/CV (Rabbit) Words
Teaching the rule: Split between two consonants (Rab-bit, Nap-kin, Den-tist).
Activity: Word Surgery. Write words on paper strips; students cut them where the syllable split occurs.
DAY 18
Compound Words
The easiest multisyllabic words. Combining two CVC words (Sun-set, Back-pack).
Activity: Compound Word Mix-and-Match. Students hold "SUN" and "SET" cards and find each other.
DAY 19
Open vs. Closed Syllables
Basic intro to why vowels change. (Ti-ger vs. Rab-bit). Focus on "Closed" syllables making short vowel sounds.
Activity: Syllable Slasher Worksheet (Part 1). Identifying the split.
DAY 20
Week 4 Review & Step Up
Review all two-syllable strategies. Practice reading longer lists of two-syllable CVC combos.
