Observe:
What visual element do these characters share?
How similar are their pronunciations?
How do their meanings differ?
What are xíngshēng (形声字)?
Semantic (形 xíng)
The component that indicates the meaning or category of the character. Often called the radical (部首 bùshǒu).
Phonetic (声 shēng)
The component that provides a clue to the pronunciation (pinyin/sound).
"Over 80% of all Chinese characters follow this structural logic."
Formula:
MEANING + SOUND = CHARACTER

Reflective Analysis:
When you encounter a character where the two parts seem to "clash" (e.g., a liquid radical with a fire phonetic), what does that tell you about the character's meaning vs. its sound?

Learning Objectives
Students will differentiate between semantic and phonetic components.
Students will identify the six standard spatial layouts for compounds.
Students will apply the "Scan-Isolate-Map-Predict" strategy to known characters.
Discussion Prompts
"Why would a language evolve to have characters that represent sound and meaning simultaneously?"
Guide students to the idea of cognitive efficiency and rapid categorization.
"Can you think of any characters where the radical is on the right?"
Ex: 鹦 (yīng) - parrot (bird radical on right). Emphasize that rules have common patterns but exceptions exist.
Anatomy Key
LEFT-RIGHT (80%)
妈 (mā) = 女 + 马
TOP-BOTTOM
爸 (bà) = 父 + 巴
OUTSIDE-INSIDE
圆 (yuán) = 囗 + 员
Pacing Note
The workshop (Worksheet Part 1) should take 15 mins. Focus on the logic , not just getting the right answer.
Worksheet Key & Logic
Character Semantic (M) Phonetic (S) Teacher Notes 饱 (bǎo) 饣 (shí) - Food 包 (bāo) - Wrapper Tone shift from 1st to 3rd. Meaning: Full. 湖 (hú) 氵(shuǐ) - Water 胡 (hú) - Bearded Perfect phonetic match. Meaning: Lake. 娶 (qǔ) 女 (nǚ) - Woman 取 (qǔ) - To Take Top-bottom. Perfect match. Meaning: To marry. 闻 (wén) 耳 (ěr) - Ear 门 (mén) - Door Outside-Inside. m → w shift. Meaning: To smell/hear.
Common Misconceptions
1. Literalism
Students often try to find a meaningful story between the sound and meaning part (e.g., "The water is on the beard of the lake"). Remind them that the phonetic part's meaning is irrelevant to the new character.
2. Part Identity
Some components can be both radicals and characters themselves. If they see 女 (woman), is it the meaning or the sound? In 80% of cases, the smaller/simpler part is the semantic radical.
Phonetic Family Slides PHONETIC FAMILY TREES
Lesson 2: Mapping Phonetic Series
方 → 放 访 房
What is a Phonetic Series?
A Phonetic Series is a group of characters that share the same sound-providing component.
Why map them?
Predict pronunciation of 10+ characters at once.
Connect vocabulary patterns instead of individual dots.
Decipher advanced words in context.
分
份fèn
扮bàn
粉fěn
吩fēn
The "Family Resemblance" Rule
Phonetic components are helpful, but they aren't always perfect clones. They usually fall into three categories:
1
The Clones
Sound and tone match exactly.
胡 → 湖
2
The Rhymers
Same finals, but different tones.
包 (1) → 饱 (3)
3
The Cousins
Shifted initials (usually similar place of articulation).
反 (f) → 板 (b)

Teacher Tip: The "Tonal Shift" Trap
When students map roots like 分 (fēn) , they will find 份 (fèn) and 粉 (fěn) .
How to handle it:
Explain that in Mandarin history, tones often shifted to change the part of speech (e.g., from verb to noun). The phonetic component stays the same because the rhyme and initial were preserved, even if the pitch contour changed.

Facilitating the Triangulation
The Goal:
To move students from "I don't know this word" (stalling) to "I can estimate this word" (flow). This is a meta-cognitive shift essential for 9th-grade proficiency.
Guided Questioning:
• "Ignore the character for a second—what kind of thing belongs in this sentence?"
• "What is the simplest version of that radical?"
• "Does that phonetic part remind you of a word you learned in level 1 or 2?"
The "Aha!" Moment
The most successful moment in this lesson occurs when a student says a "guess" and realizes they've heard that word spoken many times, but never saw it written.
Example: Identifying 琥珀 (hǔpò) by recognizing 'Tiger' (虎) and 'White' (白) and realizing it's 'Amber'.

Lesson 4: Analyzing Phonetic Irregularities
The "80%" Limitation
If 80% of characters are logical, what happened to the other 20% ?
Why the rules fail:
Historical Drift: Sounds changed over 3,000 years.
Simplification: Characters lost parts of their sound-clues.
Dialect influence: The "root" might match Cantonese or Hakka, but not Mandarin.
Case Study: "The Traitor"
噩

The "Irregular" Archetypes

Comparison: 俞 vs 输
Irregularity Key Answer Key Irregularity Key
Case Study Solutions for Lesson 4
Teacher Key
The Verdict: Why They Broke the Rules
输 (shū) vs 俞 (yú)
The Reason: In Old Chinese, these characters were much closer in sound (likely both starting with a 'th' or 's' sound). Over time, Mandarin's sound system diverged. 俞 evolved towards "y", while 输 evolved towards "sh".
Teacher Note: Other characters in the family like 偷 (tōu) or 愉 (yú) show how wildly the sound has scattered.
射 (shè) vs 身 (shēn)
The Reason: This is a "relic" case. 射 (to shoot) and 身 (body) used to share a phonetic root that meant "to strike/touch." Historically, the initial was a 'd' sound. Mandarin turned this into 'sh', but lost the 'n' final in 射 while keeping it in 身.
买 (mǎi) vs 買 (mǎi)
The Reason: Simplification. The original character 買 contains 貝 (bèi - shell/money), which provided the meaning. The top part 罒 was a simplified version of a net/sound component. When simplified to 买, the bottom part disappeared entirely, leaving a character with no visible radical or phonetic root.
Mnemonic Bridge Examples
Use these during the class discussion to help students see how to bridge the gap for irregulars.
For 输 (shū):
"The CAR (车) is SHU -shing (shooing) away the Yu fish."
For 射 (shè):
"Shoot (SHÈ ) the arrow at the person's BODY (身)."
The "80/20" Motto
"Don't let the 20% exceptions make you doubt the 80% logic. Use the logic to build speed, use mnemonics to fix the exceptions."

Criteria Mastery (4) Proficient (3) Developing (2) Structural Logic Flawlessly identifies and labels radicals and phonetics in complex compounds. Consistently identifies components in standard layouts. Identifies radicals but struggles with internal phonetic roots. Phonetic Prediction Accurately predicts pinyin, including accounting for likely tonal shifts. Predicts correct pinyin sounds for 80% of logical characters. Predicts some sounds but misses common tonal patterns. Metacognition Clearly explains the "logic path" (e.g., "History shifted this sound..."). Provides basic logic for most character identifications. Guesses correctly but cannot explain the underlying logic. Irregularity Handling Identifies "false friends" and suggests appropriate mnemonic fixes. Recognizes when a character is irregular but can't explain why. Tries to apply logic to irregular characters, resulting in errors.
