Lesson 1: Anatomy, Bones, and Muscles
LESSON OVERVIEW
Goal
Students will identify external body parts and understand that bones provide structure while muscles provide movement.
Key Terms
• Bone
• Muscle
• Brain
• Heart
• Lungs
INSTRUCTIONAL STEPS
1
Introduction (10 mins)
Use the Big Build Slides . Ask students to stand and touch their head, shoulders, and knees. Explain that inside, we have a "frame" called a skeleton.
2
Movement Lab (15 mins)
Have students "flex" their arm muscles. Ask: "Is it soft or hard?" Explain that muscles pull our bones to help us wave and walk. Use a rubber band to demonstrate how muscles stretch and pull.
3
Matching Activity (15 mins)
Distribute the Organ Match Cards . Guide students in matching the icon (picture) to the function. For life skills support, focus on one organ at a time (e.g., "Find the brain. The brain is for thinking.").
FOR ALL LEARNERS
Sensory Support
Use a plastic skeleton model or a "Mr. Potato Head" to reinforce body parts. Let students feel their pulse (heart) after jumping in place.
Visual Support
Use the included Body Parts Map worksheet. For students with limited motor skills, provide pre-cut words to glue into the boxes.

Lesson 2: Heart, Lungs, and Brain
LESSON OVERVIEW
Goal
Students will identify the primary functions of the heart (pump), lungs (breathe), and brain (think) through visual and kinesthetic learning.
Success Criteria
• Point to where the organ is located.
• Mimic the action of the organ.
• Match the organ to its job.
CLASSROOM FLOW
1
Engage: The Pumping Heart (10 mins)
Have students jump in place for 30 seconds. Help them find their heartbeat. Explain that the heart is like a pump pushing blood to their tired legs.
2
Direct Instruction: System Squad (15 mins)
Use the System Squad Slides . Focus on simple analogies (Heart = Pump, Lungs = Balloon, Brain = Boss/Computer). Encourage students to use hand gestures for each (pumping fist, expanding chest, pointing to head).
3
Application: Functional Sort (20 mins)
Use the System Function Sort . Model the first match. If students struggle with reading, read the "Action Cards" aloud and ask, "Which boss does this job?"
CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING
Use the Body Systems Check as a quick assessment. For non-verbal students, have them point to the correct icon on the worksheet when prompted.

Lesson 3: The Five Senses
LESSON OVERVIEW
Goal
Students will name the five senses and identify the body part associated with each. They will also explore how senses provide information about safety.
Materials Needed
• A yellow object (Sight)
• Something noisy (Hearing)
• Sandpaper/Cotton (Touch)
• Scented markers (Smell)
• Sweet/Sour snacks (Taste)
THE LEARNING JOURNEY
1
Engage: Mystery Bag (10 mins)
Place an object in a paper bag. Have students reach in and feel it. Ask: "How do you know what it is?" Lead into the idea of using our senses to explore.
2
Direct Instruction: Senses Slides (15 mins)
Use the Senses Superstar Slides . For each sense, have students point to the body part they use (eyes, ears, skin, nose, tongue). Discuss the safety slide carefully—how do our senses protect us?
3
Active Exploration: Scavenger Hunt (25 mins)
Distribute the Sensory Scavenger Hunt Activity . Walk with students around the room. Provide guided prompts: "I see a yellow sun on the wall. Can you find something yellow too?"
SUPPORTING ALL LEARNERS
Visual Supports
Use the Five Senses Lab worksheet for independent or small group practice. For students who do not write, allow them to circle the correct emojis.
Sensory Modification
Be mindful of sensory sensitivities. If a student is overwhelmed by loud noises or strong smells, provide alternative items (e.g., a quiet whisper or a very mild scent).

Lesson 4: Hygiene, Nutrition, and Exercise
LESSON OVERVIEW
Goal
Students will understand and demonstrate the habits required to keep their bodies healthy: washing hands (hygiene), eating colorful foods (nutrition), and moving (exercise).
Functional Focus
• Step-by-step hand washing
• Sorting healthy vs unhealthy food
• Daily activity tracking
TEACHING STEPS
1
Direct Instruction: Health Heroes Slides (15 mins)
Present the slides. Emphasize that we are "Heroes" when we protect our bodies from germs. Use the "Power Food" slide to talk about eating different colors of the rainbow.
2
Practical Skill: Hand Washing (15 mins)
Use the Germ Defense Sequencing cards. After students complete the sequence, take the class to the sink to practice the steps in real life. Use the 20-second scrub rule (singing songs).
3
Activity: Healthy Choices (15 mins)
Have students complete the Healthy Choices Tracker . This can be used as a daily exit ticket or a weekly log to encourage positive habits at school and home.
LOVING OUR BODIES
"My body is amazing. I will take good care of it."
Teacher Tip:
Focus on 'Always foods' (healthy) vs 'Sometimes foods' (treats) to avoid labeling foods as 'bad'.
Home Connection:
Send the Tracker home so parents can help students record their healthy habits over the weekend.
