Squad Sync Lesson Plan
Hyde Leadership Charter School Lesson Plan Summary
Teacher Name(s): Physical Education Department
Grade Level: Middle School (Grades 6–8)
Subject & Course: Physical Education / Teamwork Spotlight
Week & Pacing: Week of Sept 8 (90-Min Combined Block)
For Administrative Purposes:
Focus: Social-Emotional Learning, Kinesthetic Problem-Solving, Non-Verbal Strategy
Template Section
90-Minute Block: Squad Sync Cooperative Challenges
Learning Target
I can communicate non-verbally and synchronize physical movements with my squad to solve collaborative spatial and balance puzzles without stepping off designated boundaries.
Character Target
Hyde Core Values (Humility & Synergy): I will maintain a "Zero Blame Zone" by treating resets as actionable team data and giving 100% active listening focus ("One Voice at a Time").
Do Now (Ignite)
(10 mins)
Gym Entry Protocol & Silent Line Test: Students enter in athletic gear, huddle on the center court circle, and attempt a 3-minute warm-up silence challenge: arranging themselves by height without speaking.
Teacher prompts with whistle signal to test instantaneous "Hands Up / Freeze and Listen" responsiveness.
Procedure Overview: Direct Instruction (15 mins)
1. Introduce Activity 4 Code Rules:
- One Voice at a Time: Listen before pitching counters.
- Zero Blame Zone: Mistakes = free strategy data.
- Safety & Physical Space: Controlled balance, zero reckless grabbing.
- All-In Participation: Active roles for spotters, strategists, and movers.
2. Teacher Modeling & Non-Verbal Cue Demonstration:
Demonstrate body language indexing, finger counting for dates, and safe supportive spotter grips.
Procedure Overview: Guided Practice (25 mins)
Challenge 1: The Silent Line-Up (Squads of 6–10)
Students stand along a narrow gym floor tape line (beam simulation) in absolute silence (0 spoken words, no mouthing).
Round 1 (4 min): Birthday Order (Jan 1 to Dec 31 using finger sign systems).
Round 2 (4 min): Alphabetical by Middle Name (Air-gesturing letters A–Z).
Round 3 (4 min): Shoe Size (Smallest to biggest with physical foot measurement cues).
Teacher provides 1-minute tactical pauses between rounds to allow squads to establish gesture protocols.

Cooperative PE Challenges • Independent Practice, Differentiation, Assessment
90-Min Master Block
Procedure Overview: Independent Practice (25 mins)
Challenge 2: Plank Bridge Crossing (Squads of 5–6)
Goal: Transport squad 30 feet across open gym floor using only 2 small mats ("bridge planks"). Touching gym floor = full squad reset.
Step A (Compact Squeeze): All 6 players compress tightly onto Mat 1 with arms locked.
Step B (Overhead Pass): Lift empty Mat 2 overhead or pass around perimeter to the front.
Step C (Advance Step): Transfer one squad member at a time onto Mat 2 and cycle loop.
Differentiation: Content
Provide visual role prompt cards (Navigator, Anchor, Mat Courier, Safety Spotter) and laminated digit/letter boards for non-verbal support during the Line-Up.
Differentiation: Process (Both Activities)
Activity 1 (The Silent Line-Up):
- Support: Widen boundary line tape from 2" to 8" (or use floor poly-spots); students focus strictly on determining order and lining up sequentially in position without complex sliding passes.
- Extension: Narrow to balance beam width (4"); enforce strict 2.5-minute time pressure or require reverse-order shuffle.
Activity 2 (Plank Bridge Crossing):
- Support: Provide 3 mats instead of 2 (or reduce crossing distance to 15 ft); designate 1 standing verbal strategist off-mat.
- Extension: Add "total silence" condition during mat transit; implement a 3-minute strict crossing speed run.
Differentiation: Product
Students demonstrate mastery via successful line-up/crossing completion or by articulating team pivot strategies during oral squad debrief circles.
Progress Monitoring "Look Fors"
- Zero spoken language violations during Silent Line-Up ordering rounds.
- Controlled center-of-gravity holds during Compact Squeeze (no aggressive shoves).
- Constructive peer discourse following reset triggers (positive pivot language).
Exit Ticket
(15 mins)
Squad Debrief & Huddle Reflection (Oral Response):
1. Silent Communication: How did your team give clear cues without speaking?
2. Space & Balance Trust: What adjustments made squeeze-balancing possible?
3. Daily Transfer: How does trusting someone's physical balance help in sports?
Materials
Gym floor boundary tape / balance beams; 10–12 small gymnastic landing mats (2 per squad); digital display/projector for rules slides; stopwatch timer; whistle.
Co-Teaching Model
None (Solo Instructor Delivery): Lead PE teacher circulates as official referee, timekeeper, and safety auditor across active squad zones.
Other / Safety Notes
Immediate Freeze Standard: Single loud whistle blow requires all students to raise both hands and freeze instantly. Mat transport must not exceed shoulder height to prevent collisions.
