How The Game Works (Step-by-Step)
1 Lineup & Numbering
Teams stand on opposite end lines. Every player is assigned a number (1 to 6+). Ball is placed in the center circle.
2 The Coach's Callout
Coach calls 1, 2, or 3 numbers (e.g., "2 and 4!"). Those numbered players sprint into the center zone to contest the ball.
3 Attack & Line Support
Runners pass, dribble, and shoot across the opponent's line. Line players block shots with feet and pass rebounds back out to their active runners!
⚠️ Non-Negotiable Safety & Fair Play Protocols
Zero Slide-Tackles
-
Waist-Height Rule: All shots must cross the line below waist level. High kicks award an immediate turnover kick.
-
Line Anchor Zone: Line players must keep at least one foot touching their team baseline. No stepping forward into oncoming kicks.
-
Buffer Deceleration: Maintain a 5-foot safety buffer between running players and the gymnasium walls or bleachers.
-
Controlled Tackling: Only poke-tackles on the ball are permitted; shoulder checks, pushing, and sliding are strictly prohibited.

Coaching Toolkit
Tactical Pillars & Real-Time Coaching Cues
⚡ Attacking & Spacing
Avoid clustering around the ball. The off-ball runner must establish diagonal passing depth to pull defenders apart.
Coaching Cues: "Find the open window!", "Give-and-go!", "Look before you boot!"
🛡️ Defending & Jockeying
Do not dive in immediately. One defender applies pressure while the partner delays and cuts off the shooting lane.
Coaching Cues: "Stay on your toes!", "Force them wide!", "Patience over poke!"
🧠 Smart Decision-Making
Recognize 2v1 overloads. When pressured, pass backward to your baseline teammates to reset and switch attack angles.
Coaching Cues: "Use your line!", "Quick head-up scan!", "Shoot the low corner!"
🤝 Active Sideline Protocol: 100% Engagement
No Spectators
In Line Soccer, players waiting on the baseline are active goalkeepers and playmakers. They never sit or disengage:
Foot-Wall Defense Trap and redirect incoming balls with inside of foot or shins. No hands allowed unless designated goalie role.
Rebound Outlet Passes Immediately feed trapped balls back into your active runners rather than booting aimlessly downcourt.
Tactical Direction Shout helpful cues: "Man on!", "Switch!", "Time!", building communication habits.
STEP Modifications & Differentiation Matrix
S • Space Area
Expand: Widen court to reduce congestion and give ball-carriers more reaction time.
Endzone: Mark a 3-yard "no-entry" safety zone in front of lines to prevent close-range blasts.
T • Task Rules
Pass Prerequisite: Teams must complete at least 1 pass before attempting a scoring kick.
Two-Touch Rule: Advanced players are limited to 2 touches to enforce rapid ball circulation.
E • Equipment Gear
Low-Bounce Ball: Use felt or futsal balls on gym floors to prevent dangerous rebounds.
Target Cones: Set up 2 corner cone gates on lines so kickers aim for finesse rather than power.
P • People Roster
Runner Matchups: Call matching numbers based on mobility and confidence for balanced duels.
Multi-Runner: Call 3 or 4 numbers simultaneously for middle schoolers to practice zone defense.
💬 3-Minute Huddle Debrief Prompts
Formative Assessment Questions
1. Spacing & Angles
"When your teammate had the ball, what did you do without the ball to make their pass easier?"
2. Defensive Patience
"Why was diving in reckless, and how did delaying the attacker help your line teammates recover?"
3. Sideline Value
"How did the players on the line directly impact whether your team kept possession or scored?"
