Refusal Strategy Menu

Simple No
Just say "No thanks" or "I'm good." Short and direct.

Tell It Like It Is
State the facts: "I don't do drugs" or "I'm not into that."

Give an Excuse
"I have practice tomorrow" or "My parents check my breath."

Stall
"Maybe later" or "Let me think about it" to buy time to leave.

Change the Subject
"No thanks. Hey, did you see the game last night?"

Broken Record
Keep repeating the same "No" every time they ask.

Walk Away
Say nothing or say "No" and simply leave the area.

Cold Shoulder
Ignore the person and keep talking to someone else.

Avoid the Situation
If you know drugs will be there, don't go at all.
Classroom Activity
Cut out the 12 scenario cards. For each situation, decide which strategy (1-9) would be most effective. Write the strategy number in the space provided on each card before role-playing with a partner.
Scenario 01
You're at a house party and your friend's older brother brings out a bottle of vodka. Everyone is taking turns taking shots and they hand the bottle to you next. What do you do?

You go into the school bathroom and see three of your classmates vaping. One of them blows a cloud toward you and says, "Come on, try this new flavor, it's just fruit juice."

Your best friend shows you a plastic baggie of pills they found in their parents' medicine cabinet. They say, "I think these are for focus. Let's take some before the math test."

While walking home, a group of older kids stops you. They are smoking cigarettes and offer you one, calling you a "baby" when you hesitate to take it.
