1 Anatomy of Linear Perspective
Master the 4 fundamental elements
Horizon Line (HL)
Represents viewer's eye level. Where sky meets ground. Always a true horizontal line.
Rule: Everything anchors here
Vanishing Point (VP)
A single point resting directly on the horizon line where parallel lines appear to meet.
One VP in 1-point view
Orthogonal Lines
Diagonal receding lines connecting object corners directly to the vanishing point.
Draw lightly with ruler
Transversals
Horizontal and vertical lines forming the front & back faces. Never angle toward the VP.
Always parallel to paper edges
Eye Level Rule:
Above Horizon: Worm's-eye view (underside is visible)
On Horizon: Eye-level view (neither top nor bottom visible)
Below Horizon: Bird's-eye view (top face is visible)
2 Guided Construction: The 3 Box Challenge
Follow the 3-step method: (1) Lightly align corners to VP with ruler. (2) Draw parallel back edges to cut depth. (3) Darken visible contour lines.
Use Straightedge Only

FRONT FACE UNDERSIDE SIDE ★ COMPLETED MODEL BOX
✓ 1-Pt Perspective Anatomy
Look closely at the completed box on the left:
-
Front Face: Remains a true 2D rectangle facing you.
-
Receding Sides: Orthogonals aim directly at VP.
-
Parallel Rear: Back edges stay true 0° horizontal & 90° vertical.
-
Underside: Exposed because the box sits above eye level!
A FRONT
Above Eye Level
Task: Connect 3 corners to VP; show underside
B FRONT
Below Eye Level
Task: Connect 3 corners to VP; show top face
C FRONT
Eye Level (Crosses HL)
Task: Connect corners to VP; only side face visible!
[D] Independent Box: Draw your own 2D front face here, then project to VP
Draw 2D face & project

Studio Exercise
3 Irregular Forms: Block Letters & Curves
Connect every visible vertex / tangent edge to the Vanishing Point
SHAPE 1: Block Letter "L" Inner Corner!
VP
Don't miss the inside corner orthogonal!
SHAPE 2: Triangular Roof Apex Vertex
VP
Project top apex and base corners to VP.
SHAPE 3: 3D Cylinder Tangent Lines
VP
Align ruler to outer edge tangents.
4 Spatial Scene Challenge: Street Vista or Room Interior
Construct a complete spatial environment using the marked Horizon Line & VP. Choose Option A (Looking down a City Street) with buildings, doors, and sidewalk lines, OR Option B (Looking into a Room) with floor tiles, back wall, and window.
