What is a DAW?
A Digital Audio Workstation is your virtual recording studio. It is where you record, edit, mix, and arrange musical elements.
Think of it as a canvas, where sound waves, software instruments, and loops are your paint.

The Heartbeat: Tempo

BPM = Beats Per Minute
Tempo dictates the speed and energy of your track. If you change the BPM, you stretch or compress time.

The metronome acts as your audio guide. It clicks on every beat so you can stay in perfect timing while composing.

In modern production, time is divided into bars (measures) and beats .
A Bar usually contains 4 beats in modern music.
Each beat can be subdivided into halves (eighths) or quarters (sixteenths).

Patterns Beatmaker
Drum Programming
In Soundtrap, you build drum beats visually by clicking on active squares in a 16-step grid. Each beat has 4 steps.
Kick (Bass)
Snare
Hi-Hat
Kick: Low, punchy, holds the start of the bar. Snare: Mid-range, sharp, hits on beats 2 and 4. Hi-Hat: High-frequency, ticks out subdivisions.

Log into Soundtrap and program two distinct 1-bar drum patterns using the Patterns Beatmaker:
The Classic: Kick on 1 and 3, Snare on 2 and 4, steady Hi-Hats.
The Syncopator: Move one Kick drum off-beat to create a custom bounce!
Set your project tempo (BPM) between 90 and 120 before programming!
SUBMISSION CHECKLIST
Log into Soundtrap and open a blank project.
Select the "Drum & Beats" track type.
Program Pattern A (Standard) in Bar 1.
Program Pattern B (Syncopated) in Bar 2.
Rename and save your project as "YourName_Beatmaker".

Introduce the concept of a DAW as the canvas of modern sound creation. 10 - 25 Min Direct Instruction Deliver the Grid & Groove Slides . Walk students through BPM, the concept of the grid (bars/beats), and break down the roles of the Kick (bass), Snare (sharp mid), and Hi-Hats (fast tick). 25 - 35 Min Live Demo Project your screen. Log in to Soundtrap. Open studio, create a Drum & Beats track. Click steps on the Patterns Beatmaker to demonstrate the standard beat. Explain the loop function. 35 - 55 Min Studio Challenge Students open their computers, sign in, and work through their first task: Program Pattern A (Classic) and Pattern B (Syncopated) . Walk the room with headphones to monitor progress. 55 - 60 Min Wrap-Up Invite 2-3 students to play their syncopated loop out loud. Create an airy, relaxing soundscape that sounds like floating through the clouds. Focus on space and high-frequency layers.

Neon Escape
Construct a fast, high-intensity electronic track suitable for a high-tech racing game or cybernetic heist sequence.
Requirements:
Fast tempo (130 - 145 BPM)
Heavy electronic synth bass
Fast 4-on-the-floor drum beat
Pro Tip: Use the track volume fader to keep the synth bass louder than the melody loop so the groove stays powerful!
LEVEL: MEDIUM 03 / 04
Vinyl Brew
Layer warm, cozy, acoustic-driven loops to mimic a coffeehouse vinyl performance. Bring in natural textures.
Requirements:
Moderate tempo (80 - 95 BPM)
Acoustic piano or guitar chord loop
Shaker or tambourine loops
Pro Tip: Find a "vinyl static" or "rain track" SFX loop in Soundtrap to lay down underneath the track for analog warmth!
LEVEL: HARD 04 / 04
Final Ascent
Create an intense, theatrical crescendo loop that sounds like a movie trailer climax. Build maximum density.
Requirements:
5+ tracks layered simultaneously
Heavy orchestral strings (staccato)
Low cinematic sub-bass drop SFX
Pro Tip: Stagger the entry of your loops. Let a quiet melody loop play for 2 bars before adding the full cinematic percussion drop!

1. Press Add New Track and choose Synthesizer or Piano .
2. Open the instrument window to see the keyboard map. Try playing a 3-note melody in rhythm with your metronome.
3. Hit Record (Red circle at bottom). Once recorded, press Ctrl + A , right-click, and select Quantize > 1/8 .

The Goal
You are now the Lead Producer. Your task is to organize your previously built drums, loops, and custom melodies into a complete, dynamic song with distinct sections that tell a story.
Minimum Technical Criteria:
Exactly 16 bars long
Minimum of 4 distinct tracks
Clean volumes (no clipping!)

Your song must flow through these 4 structural chapters:
1. Intro (Bars 1-4): Build tension. 1-2 tracks only.
2. Main (Bars 5-8): The core beat. All tracks play.
3. Break (Bars 9-12): Drums drop out. Melody solo.
4. Outro (Bars 13-16): Energy fades away.
