Introduction (Slides 1-2)
"Good morning, everyone! Get ready to explore a super fun and exciting sport today: Volleyball! Has anyone here ever played volleyball before, or seen it played? What do you know about it?"
[Allow 2 minutes for brief student responses.]
"Great! Today, we're going to learn the fundamental skills you need to play, understand some important rules, and learn the special language of volleyball. Our goal is to make sure you feel confident and ready to play a basic game!"
Skill 1: The Bump (Slide 3)
"Let's start with the most basic skill: the bump , also known as the forearm pass. This is usually the first way your team will touch the ball. Imagine the ball is coming over the net, and you need to keep it from hitting the ground!"
"To do a good bump, you need to get into an athletic stance. Bend your knees, keep your feet shoulder-width apart, and lean slightly forward. Now, the most important part: your arms! Lock your arms straight out in front of you, hands together. It doesn't matter how you hold your hands, as long as your forearms are flat and together. Try it with me!"
[Demonstrate arm platform: one hand cupped inside the other, thumbs parallel.]
"Everyone stand up! Bend those knees, arms straight out, hands together. Now, pretend a ball is coming, and lift with your legs! Don't swing your arms—use your legs like a spring!"
Skill 2: The Set (Slide 4)
"Next up is the set . This is often the second touch your team makes, and it's all about setting up a teammate. Think of it like passing the ball gently to a friend, but above your head!"
"For a set, you want your hands to form a 'triangle' or 'diamond' shape with your thumbs and index fingers, right above your forehead. Your elbows should be out, and your fingertips are what will touch the ball, not your palms."
"Everyone, hands up! Make that diamond shape above your forehead. Now, gently push up with your wrists and extend your arms, like you're setting an invisible ball. Keep those hands 'soft'!"
Skill 3: The Serve (Slide 5)
"The serve is how every point begins! Today, we're focusing on the underhand serve . Hold the ball in your non-hitting hand around waist height. Step forward with your opposite foot. Now, with your hitting hand—either a fist or a firm open palm—swing your arm like a pendulum and hit the ball right in the middle."
