Anatomy of a Street Letter
02 / Letter Mechanics
1. The Skeleton
The basic stick armature. Lightly sketch this first to lock proportions.
Sets height, slant & spacing.
2. The Bars
Geometric or curved tubes wrapped around the skeleton.
Maintain equal bar weight!
3. Overlaps
Decide which bar passes over or under to lock the wordmark together.
Creates unified depth & flow.
Pro Tip: Never jump to outlines first. Solid letter anatomy guarantees readable, powerful work!

Characteristics of Bubble Style
- • Puffy Silhouettes: Corners are inflated and rounded like balloons. Harsh corners are softened.
- • Compact Negative Space: Inner holes (O, P, B) become tiny dots, slits, or pinholes.
- • Pillow Overlaps: Letters press tightly together, with left-over-right overlaps.

Pencil Tip: Draw ovals around joint points and merge boundaries.
Consistency: Keep the upper capline and lower baseline steady!

Creating 3D Illusion
Method A: 3D Extrusion
Pulls the letter backwards into space at a consistent 45° isometric angle.
1 Pick ONE angle (e.g. 45° down and right).
2 Project parallel lines from each corner.
3 Cap edges parallel to the front face.
Method B: Offset Drop Shadow
A duplicate letter silhouette cast directly behind onto the background plane.
1 Establish a fixed light source point.
2 Cast shadow strictly opposite to light.
3 Fill solid black or deep contrast navy.
Golden Rule of Depth: Never change your angle mid-wordmark! Parallel lines remain parallel.
