30-Minute Lesson Architecture
5 Mins Tongue Explorer & Hook
10 Mins Mini-Lesson & Plaque Demo
10 Mins Dry-Brush Guided Practice
5 Mins Sparkle Chant & Exit Ticket
Phase 1: Hook & Tongue Explorer (5 Mins)
Slides 1–2
Prompt students: "Take your clean tongue and gently run it across the front of your teeth. How do they feel? Are they smooth? Slippery? Bumpy?"
Explain that teeth are like little shields made to help us bite crunchy apples, speak clear words (like "th" and "sh" ), and flash bright smiles. Introduce Chomper the tooth character.
Phase 2: The Plaque Monster & The Big Demo (10 Mins)
Slides 3–5
Visual explanation: Introduce plaque as invisible "sugar bugs" that build sticky coats on teeth when crumbs sit around. If left alone, they create tiny holes called cavities.
Teacher Demonstration: Show the upside-down white egg carton model (representing bottom teeth). Smear washable brown/yellow marker or dry-erase marker between the egg cups ("sugar bugs"). Use a large toothbrush to show that scrubbing sideways leaves gunk in the cracks, but making gentle little circles sweeps it clean away!

Phase 3: The 3-Zone Mirror Practice (10 Mins)
Slide 5 & Toothbrush Props
Hand out clean practice dry toothbrushes (or popsicle stick "brushes"). Guide students through the 3 Tooth Zones using call-and-response hand motions:
1. Outside Front "Round & round like bicycle wheels!"
2. Chewing Tops "Choo-choo train tracks, back & forth!"
3. Inside Hiding "Sweep the ceiling & sweep the floor!"
Key safety reminder: Only use a pea-sized drop of toothpaste and always spit, don't swallow !
Phase 4: Wrap-Up & Tooth Hero Pledge (5 Mins)
Slides 6–7
Sing the "Sparkle Tooth Song" together twice while mimicking brushing movements. Hand out the Tooth Hero Practice Sheet for desk completion or transition time, and send home the 7-Day Sparkle Tracker .
The Sparkle Tooth Chant (Tune: "Row, Row, Row Your Boat") Action Song
"Brush, brush, brush your teeth, / Brush them every day!
Front and back and chewing tops, / Chase the bugs away!
Round and round in circles small, / Two whole minutes through,
Morning bright and starry night, / Sparkle smiles for you!"
Differentiation Strategies
Support (Fine Motor): Use wider-grip trainer brushes; partner with a buddy for mirror modeling.
ELL / Visual: Rely on gesture icons (circle motion, train motion, 2-finger "2x2" sign).
Sensory Need: Offer soft silicone brush textures or finger-towel models if bristles feel overwhelming.
Common Misconceptions
"Harder brushing cleans better" → Hard scrubbing hurts pink gums; gentle circles protect enamel!
"Baby teeth don't matter" → Baby teeth hold the roadmap spaces for strong adult teeth.
"Toothpaste tastes good to eat" → Reinforce spit-spit-spit into the sink!
Quick Formative Check (Exit Observation)
□ Can state: "2 times a day, 2 minutes each."
□ Demonstrates circular brushing motion.
□ Identifies 1 tooth-friendly food vs sweet culprit.

What Do Our Teeth Do?
1. Munch & Chew
Teeth chop and mash crunchy apples, veggies, and bread so we can grow!
2. Speak & Sing
Your tongue and teeth work together to make clear sounds like "th" and "s"!
3. Flash a Smile
Healthy teeth give us a shiny smile that shares kindness and joy with friends!
Tongue Explorer: Run your clean tongue over your teeth right now. Are they smooth or bumpy?
Look Out!
Beware of Plaque & Sugar Bugs!
What is Plaque?
Plaque is a sticky, invisible blanket of tiny germs. When sweet food sits on teeth, these germs wake up and party!
What are Cavities?
Germs make acid that can drill tiny holes in teeth called cavities. Cavities can hurt your mouth!
Our Super Weapon: The Toothbrush!
Brushing sweeps the sugar bugs right off before they can build cavities. You are your smile's hero!
Rule: Never let sugar bugs sleep on your teeth overnight! Brush Before Bed!

"Sweep Up & Out!"
Tilt your brush to sweep the inside hiding spots by your tongue and roof!

Family Dental Tips from the Dentist
1. Pea-Sized Drop First graders only need a pea-sized dot of fluoride toothpaste. Remind them to spit out the foam!
2. Assist & Check Kids are developing motor skills. Let them brush first, then have an adult do a quick "sparkle sweep."
3. Brush Replacement Swap toothbrushes every 3 months or right after a cold when bristles begin to fray and spread.
