SCOOTER CARGO EXPRESS
Grades 1–4 • Co-op Physical Education Lesson Plan
DELIVERY CO.
Learning Domains
• Core Strength
• Lower Body Propulsion
• Cooperative Teamwork
Duration
45 Minutes
Core Objectives
Students work in shipper-receiver pairs to safely pilot scooter boards, transporting cargo blocks across designated routes. Focuses on developing physical balance, hamstring/quadriceps drive, and verbal coordination to ensure freight does not spill.
Standards (SHAPE America)
S1.E5: Performs locomotor skills in a variety of movement patterns.
S2.E1: Recognizes space awareness concepts in physical activities.
S4.E4: Works cooperatively with a partner in small groups to accomplish a challenge.
Required Gear
• 12–15 Scooter Boards
• 24 Cones (4 colors)
• 30 Beanbags (Cargo)
• 15 Yoga Blocks (Cargo)
• 12 Foam Balls (Cargo)
• 12 Hula Hoops
Gym Layout & Set-Up
1:1 Scale Court Map
1. Loading Docks (Start Zone): Hula hoops lined up along the south gym wall. Holds cargo reserves.
2. Transit Routes (The Floor): Open space with orange dome cones marking delivery lanes. No-go zones (speed bumps) marked with yellow cones.
3. Receiving Warehouses (Finish Zone): Delivery hoops along the north wall where pairs unload cargo.
NORTH WALL [RECEIVING WAREHOUSES] (Hoops)
▲ Lane 1 ▲ Speed Bumps (Cones) ▲ Lane 2
SOUTH WALL [LOADING DOCKS] (Scooters & Cargo)
CRITICAL SAFETY REGULATIONS
Keep Fingers Away: Fingers must grip handles/underneath rims, never on top or wrapped near wheels.
Stay Low: No standing on scooters. Kneeling, sitting, or tummy (prone) riding only.
No Collisions: Treat scooters like heavy-duty delivery trucks. Brake early, keep eyes forward.
Clear Floor: Runaway cargo must be picked up immediately to prevent slip hazards.

Execution Phase, Differentiation, & Student Assessment Rubric
STAGE: ACTIVE RUNS
Lesson Pacing & Activities
00–10 MIN
Engine Prep Warm-Up: Students learn safe postures (Tummy Glide, Sit Propulsion, Kneel Tug). Practice single-scooter mobility across the line. (Refer to Engine Prep Warm-Up Card).
10–30 MIN
Main Event: Scooter Cargo Express:
Partners team up. One is the "Carrier" (seated/prone on scooter), the other is the "Navigator" (guiding or gently towing the cargo). They load one cargo block onto the carrier's lap or scooter. Navigator guides them safely across to the Receiving Warehouse. Unload, swap roles, and ride back. Repeat to deliver all cargo!
30–40 MIN
Express Delivery Modifications (Grades 3-4):
Add "Speed Bumps" (cones to weave around). Introduce "Double Freight" (carrying two items balancing at once). Implement towing ropes where Navigators pull the Carrier backwards using a safe tow strap/pool noodle.
40–45 MIN
Cargo Inspection & Reflection:
Collect all scooters. Sit on the loading docks. Discuss: How did you communicate with your partner when the cargo started sliding? Which muscle group did you feel working the most during propulsion?
Differentiation by Grade Band
Grades 1–2 (Introductory Setup)
Focus on single-item deliveries (light beanbags). Simple straight paths without obstacles. Support with a "holding hand" rather than rope pulling.
Grades 3–4 (Advanced Routes)
Incorporate weave paths (slalom). Use multi-shape cargo (foam balls that roll off easily). Introduce "Team Freight Trains" (three students working together).
Assessment Metric Express Tier (3) Standard Tier (2) Needs Repair (1) Safety Compliance Grips handles correctly; keeps feet low; never stands or collides. Occasional reminder needed for hands or bumper posture. Disregards safe speeds; attempts to stand or bump others. Propulsion Mechanics Demonstrates strong quad/core drive; maintains balanced body control. Propels scooter but struggles with trunk control or speed consistency. Unable to move scooter independently using leg or core drive. Cooperative Teamwork Constant positive communication; smooth handoffs; supportive guiding. Slight struggle to coordinate start/stops, but cooperates overall. No partner coordination; argues over roles or leaves partner behind.

Strictly no standing on scooters. Ride on your tummy, sit with crossed legs, or kneel comfortably.
3
No Collisions Allowed
Maintain a 3-foot bumper zone around all other scooters. Keep your eyes up and drive defensively!
