Instructional Action
Locate a mailbox, overgrown shrub, or deep puddle on the shoulder. Practice the "Stop, Look, Clear" sequence before stepping briefly toward the white edge line. Never allow participants to dart out into traffic.
Facilitator Script
"Never let an obstacle push you into traffic. We stop first. We check for cars. We only step around when the lane is 100% empty."
Sensory Awareness
Instructional Action
Pause before a curve or hill crest where visual distance is restricted. Have participants freeze and close their eyes for 10 seconds to listen for tire hums or engine acceleration. Teach them to walk as far out on the outer grass edge as possible.
Facilitator Script
"On a curve, drivers can't see you until the last second. When your eyes can't see, your ears are your best protection!"
Emergency Reaction
Instructional Action
Call out "Car up!" when a large delivery truck or bus is observed approaching. Instruct all participants to immediately step 2-3 paces into the grass/verge, stop walking, face the vehicle, and wait until it completely clears.
Facilitator Script
"Big trucks have wide mirrors and blind spots. Step into the grass and give them the road. Never share a narrow shoulder with a truck!"
