Teacher Facilitation Guide: Egg & Spoon Edition
Learning Objectives

The Game Plan

Warm-Up & Setup
Set up lanes of 15–20 feet. Have students practice walking without eggs, then balancing just the spoon, then adding the egg while standing still.

The Multi-Step Sequence
Explain the relay sequence clearly: "Walk to the cone → Circle the cone once → Return to your team → Hand off the spoon to the next runner without dropping the egg."

Sportsmanship Debrief
Before starting, ask: "What do we do if the egg drops?" (Stop, pick it up, reset). "How do we support our teammates?" (Cheer, encourage, no blaming).
Adaptations & Differentiation
Simplify
Use larger spoons or smaller eggs.
Allow the use of a second hand to "guide" (but not hold) the egg.
Shorten the distance or remove the cone-turn.
Challenge
Add obstacles (zig-zag through cones).
Specify a "hand-off" zone where runners must stand on one leg.
Use the non-dominant hand for holding the spoon.
Teacher Pro-Tip
Watch for "thumb-locking"—students using their thumb to hold the egg in place. To enforce coordination, have them keep their thumb under the spoon handle or tucked into their palm.

The Rules of the Race

The Grip: Hold the spoon by the handle with one hand. No touching the egg with your hands or thumbs!

The Course: Walk to the marking cone, walk all the way around it, and head back to your team.

The Drop: If the egg falls, you must stop, pick it up, place it back on the spoon, and take 3 big steps back before continuing.

The Hand-off: You must come to a full stop before the next person in line takes the spoon from you.
Sportsmanship Code

Cheer Loudly: Support your own team and the other teams too!
No Blaming: If a teammate drops an egg, tell them "You've got this!"
Shake Hands: After the race, congratulate the other teams.

The "No-Go" Zone
Rule #1: The Thumb
NO using your thumb to hold the egg! If a judge sees your thumb on top of the egg, you will have to restart your turn.

Did it drop? No problem! Stop, pick it up, take 3 giant steps backward, and keep going!
