The Passport Portfolio

Project Vision
The Passport Portfolio is a high-capstone project where students curate a digital interactive map or portfolio showcasing their linguistic growth and cultural insights from the school year. Instead of a traditional exam, students document "stops" on their language journey, scripting narratives and presenting their travelogue entirely in the Target Language (TL).
Essential Objectives
Presentational Speaking: Deliver a coherent 3–5 minute travel-themed presentation in the TL with visual anchors (maps, artifacts, photos).Cultural Literacy: Compare and contrast target cultures with home perspectives, defending insights with curated primary or secondary sources.Linguistic Self-Reflection: Evaluate personal proficiency gains over the academic year, setting long-term intercultural milestones.
Unit Timeline & Milestones
Phase 1: Spark & Blueprint (Days 1–3)
Introduce project requirements and models. Students complete the Brainstorming Organizer and select 3 cultural "stops" and 1 personal linguistic milestone.
Phase 2: Curate & Script (Days 4–7)
Students build their digital mapping tool or presentation slides. Draft target-language commentary, peer-edit scripts, and record voiceovers (if asynchronous).
Phase 3: Rehearse & Showcase (Days 8–10)
Conduct peer test runs using practice checklists. Live class exhibition where students present their final maps and complete active listening grids.

Scaffolded Facilitation Steps
Step 1: Selecting the Digital Mapping/Portfolio Platform
Recommend free platforms: Google My Maps (plotting custom pins with descriptions/photos), Padlet (map layout), StoryMap JS, or Google Slides. Ensure students toggle share settings to "Anyone with link can view".
Step 2: Scripting & Target Language Prompts
Ensure students utilize different tenses. Provide classroom visual aids or anchor charts featuring sentence frames such as: "Este año, me sorprendió que..." / "Si viajara a [país], visitaría..." / "Mi mayor logro lingüístico fue..."
Target Language Discussion Prompts
Use these prompts during checkpoint mini-interviews and presentation Q&A rounds:
Linguistic Progress "How has your ability to describe cultural nuances changed from September to now?"
Perspective Shift "What cultural custom challenged your initial expectations or assumptions?"
Differentiation Strategies
Student Profile Suggested Scaffolds & Extensions Support / Struggling Learners Restrict mapping to 2 regions instead of 3. Provide customized fill-in-the-blank script templates and permit audio pre-recordings instead of a live presentation. Extension / Heritage Speakers Require students to conduct a live interview style "travel vlog" segment, using target-language idiomatic expressions and comparing regional slang varieties.
Exhibition Day Protocol
1. Travel Circles: Divide the classroom into groups of 4. Three students act as "travel agents" presenting, while the fourth reviews and takes passport notes.
2. Interactivity: Encourage presenters to ask their audience a "trivia" question at the end of their segment to secure active listening.
3. Portfolio Archiving: Compile all digital map URLs into a shared database (e.g., wakelet, google doc) for a parent/community showcase.

What is the Passport Portfolio?
Your final project is a digital travel log of the school year.
Instead of taking a paper final exam, you will select your favorite cultural and linguistic moments, map them digitally, and present your travel log in the target language.

A live 3-5 minute narrative highlighting why each stop shaped your perspective.

Your Portfolio Checklist

Three Cultural "Stops"
Select three distinct cultural discoveries (traditions, landmarks, dishes, historical events) that fascinated you this year.

One Language Peak
Highlight your proudest linguistic breakthrough of the year (e.g., mastering past tense, ordering food, writing a full poem).

Multimedia Anchors
Each pin must include a title, 5-sentence description in the TL, and an image, video link, or personal audio reflection.

Choose Your Map Platform
Google My Maps
Create a custom interactive globe. Plot real pins across countries, upload photos, and organize stops using different colored layers.
StoryMap JS or Padlet Map
Create a linear pathway. Tell your language story chronologically or slide-by-slide, with continuous panning and media elements.
Tip: Keep file permissions set to "Public" or "Anyone with link" so your class can view your map!

Target Language & Delivery Rules
Linguistic Expectations
• Write description text entirely in the Target Language.
• Use rich descriptive adjectives and correct tenses (past/conditional).
• Reference specific cultural terminology instead of general translations.
Showcase Etiquette
• Do not read word-for-word from slides. Use notes as memory cues.
• Maintain comfortable eye contact and articulate words slowly.
• Invite audience interaction with an opening question or end-trivia stop.

Mission: Pack your bags and chart your progress! For your language capstone, you will build an interactive map featuring three cultural "stops" that intrigued you this year, and one personal "language peak." Use this official journal to plan your scripts and present your journey to the class in the Target Language.
Expedition Requirements

Criteria Advanced (4 pts) Proficient (3 pts) Developing (1-2 pts) Cultural Insight & Content Presents 3 highly vivid cultural stops with insightful, primary comparisons. Presents 3 stops with standard factual descriptions. Some comparison to home culture. Fewer than 3 stops or descriptions are basic, heavily copied translations. Linguistic Control & Tenses Demonstrates accurate usage of multiple verb tenses (past/present/conditional) with rich TL vocab. Verb endings are mostly accurate; relies heavily on simple present tense. Clear meaning. Pervasive grammatical errors in the TL hinder reader comprehension. No variety in verbs.
