Morning Zen Lesson Plan Morning Zen
Teacher Lesson Plan
Duration: 30 Minutes
Audience: Grades 3-5
Goal: Focus & Focus
Why This Matters
Yoga and mindfulness give students tools to manage stress, improve focus, and develop emotional regulation. Starting the day with intentional movement sets a calm, productive tone for the entire classroom environment.
Lesson Objective
Students will practice gentle yoga poses and rhythmic breathing techniques to increase physical awareness, reduce tension, and improve mental concentration.
Materials
Yoga mats (or floor space)
Calm background music
Pose Reference Handout
"Zen Start" Slide Deck
The Zen Flow
5 Min
Connection & Intention
Gather students in a seated circle on their mats.
Define Yoga: Explain it's a way to connect our bodies and minds.
Benefits: Discuss how movement helps us focus and feel calm.
Set Intention: Ask students to think of one word they want to feel today (e.g., "Ready," "Peaceful," "Strong").
15 Min
Gentle Movement Flow
Guide students through the sequence using the reference handout.
Mountain Pose: Focus on standing tall and finding balance.
Forward Bend: Let the neck relax; "be a floppy ragdoll."
Cat-Cow Stretch: Link movement to breath (inhale for cow, exhale for cat).
Child's Pose: A safe space to rest anytime they need a break.
Tree Pose: Practice focusing on one spot to maintain balance.
5 Min
Mindful Breathing
Focus on the "pulse" of the breath.
Belly Breathing: Hands on bellies to feel the expansion.
Alternate Nostril: Use fingers to slow down and balance the airflow.
Encourage closed eyes or a "soft gaze" to minimize distractions.
5 Min
Closing Reflection
Final seated position for cool down.
Check-in: How does your body feel compared to 30 minutes ago?
One Word: Go around the circle (or turn and talk) to share a word.
Transfer: "Whenever you feel stressed today, remember your belly breath."
Teacher Prep
Clear floor space or lay out mats. Queue a "Yoga for Kids" or "Lo-fi Chill" playlist. Dim the lights if possible to create a sensory shift in the room.
Pro-Tip
Use "whisper voices" during the practice to help maintain the calm atmosphere. If students are wiggly, don't correct them—just model the pose yourself.

Gentle Yoga Poses
1. Mountain Pose
Tada-sana
Stand tall with feet together. Relax your shoulders. Feel your weight evenly on your feet. Let your arms hang at your sides. Imagine a string pulling the top of your head toward the sky.
2. Forward Bend
Uttana-sana
Exhale and bend forward from your hips. Keep your knees slightly bent. Let your arms and head hang heavy like a ragdoll. Let all your worries fall off your back and onto the floor.
3. Cat-Cow Stretch
Chakra-vakasana
Start on hands and knees. Cow: Inhale and arch your back, looking up. Cat: Exhale and round your back like a spooky cat, looking at your belly.
4. Child's Pose
Bala-sana
Sit back on your heels. Stretch your arms forward on the floor. Rest your forehead gently on the mat. This is your "quiet cave" where you can always go to feel safe and calm.
5. Tree Pose
Vriksh-asana
Stand on one leg. Place the sole of your other foot on your inner thigh (avoid your knee!). Bring your hands together at your chest or reach them up like branches. Find one "focus point" on the wall to help you stay still.
Breathing Power
Deep Belly Breathing
Place your hands on your belly. Inhale deeply through your nose and feel your belly grow like a balloon. Exhale slowly through your mouth and feel it flatten. Repeat 3 times.
Alternate Nostril Breath
Close one nostril with a finger. Inhale through the open side. Switch nostrils and exhale through the other side. This helps balance your brain and calm your nerves.
Practice Anywhere!
You don't need a yoga mat to use these tools. Try a Forward Bend before a big test, or Belly Breathing if you're feeling frustrated at recess.
